I still love this track though. No Way Out is greatness.
Never been a Blink 182 fan, but their behind the scenes stuff on MTV always made me think they seemed like cool dudes. I remember they renamed fan “meet and greets” as “meet and creeps,” which anyone who has helped run one can definitely relate to. Then again, I also remember seeing some of that awful reality show about Travis Barker’s marriage. So I guess it’s a push.
Anyway, Travis has been “remixing” random hip-hop joints over the last year by playing live drums alongside the track. This one with Busta Rhymes’ “Don’t Touch Me (Throw Da Water On ‘Em)” is the best one by far, mainly because he actually picked a good song to rework. No matter how much you kill the drums on a Soulja Boy track, I still can’t listen to that…

I swear I’m not a “hater,” there’s just an incredible amount of wackness out there these days, particularly in hip-hop. Back in college, I got tired of people blindly singing along to whatever they heard on the air or at parties, so I decided to start calling out horrible lyrics. “Wack Lyric of the Day” was born, though I should mention that at the time, I also tossed in a “Dope Lyric” and a “Dope Song” too.
Now, I’ve reincarnated WLotD. However, these days, times are tougher. The environment’s in peril, there’s a worldwide food crisis, gas prices are through the roof, our economy is hemmoraging, and some people actually think Lil’ Wayne is the best rapper alive. So rather than bring back all the daily categories, you only get the Wack Lyric. Perhaps in happier times we can shine light on some dopeness, but for now, there’s too much idiocy running rampant in these songs.
Oh, and just in case people get all sensitive, having a wack lyric doesn’t mean you’re a wack rapper. Sometimes I’ll call out rappers I really dig, if they spit something dumb. In 2008, wackness knows no boundaries…

What better way to start off my blogging than by bigging up one of my favorite MC’s in the game, Lupe Fiasco. Here’s some footage of Lu receiving his gold plaque for the ridiculously dope The Cool album. If you haven’t copped it yet, you’re sleeping. We need to support the good hip-hop major labels decide to put out, otherwise it’s ringtone rap for all. Special appearances from the homey Jason Salvador, Lupe’s murse, and I think my dude Niles is somewhere there in the crowd.
Lu’s on point with the idea of “selling positivity” and “feeling good morally” about what they release. Hopefully other artists follow suit. Keep it up Lu!

I waded into the blogosphere a few years ago on my MySpace page, but now it’s time that I go ahead and cannonball myself into the deep end. So welcome to The Audacity of Dope, which will hopefully serve as a representation of all things I consider noteworthy going on in my life and the world at large. Here, you’ll be able to stay up to date on everything I’m doing in my DJ’ing career as “DJ Hyphen,” including my weekly radio shows on Seattle’s KUBE 93.3 FM, my interviews with some of the dopest musicians on the planet, and my Beats, Rhymes, and Life mixtape series. This site will begin as a blog, but it’ll soon double as an archive for everything I’ve worked on in the music industry. Bare with me though, this is my first site after all.
Also, while I’ve seen some other music related blogs receive criticism for occasionally veering off topic, I’m looking forward to using TAOD to speak my mind on whatever comes up. Part of the beauty of the internet (at least in this country) is that we’re all free to publish our ideas, and this is going to be my own little soapbox.
