Justin & Britney

“When you cheated girl, my heart bleeded girl”
–Justin Timberlake, “What Goes Around, Comes Around”

Just like when you mispronounce a word to make it rhyme, if you make up a word, that’s wack too.  This song is great though, I can’t front.

Lupe Fiasco music video contest

Lupe on stage

The homies over at The Lupe Fiasco Show are giving aspiring music video directors an opportunity to get some shine, along with all sorts of cool prizes.  Go here for the complete rules, but basically, if you make a video for either “Gotta Eat,” “Just Might Be Okay,” or “And He Gets The Girl,” and you win, you’ll be featured on Lupe’s official website and get a bunch of autographed goodies.  So be creative, break out Final Cut Pro, and get busy…

Oh, and I don’t know if I’d recommend tackling “And He Gets The Girl,” unless you think you can top this web video some kid made a while back.  If you think you can, show and prove.  Good luck.

“I’m sending you some text messages/
But you can call ’em sex messages/
And IDK when I’ll be there/
But I’ll TTY later and we’ll be loving ASAP/
And we can XOXO”
–Raheem DeVaughn, “Text Messages”

Raheem is the man, but the hook on this joint just makes me cringe. He should leave these kinds of metaphors to Kells.

The Roots at the 2008 UCLA Jazz & Reggae Festival

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Videos on July 29th, 2008 by Hyphen

Aside from Kanye’s “Glow In The Dark Tour,” I’ve never seen anyone do a better live performance than the Roots.  Seeing as how I’ve caught them about 15 times vs. 4 for ‘Ye, I think the overall edge has to go to Legendary.  In this clip from OKP TV, there’s some dope performance footage and ?uestlove and Black Thought talk about their live show strategy.  Plus, Greg The Dude broke out the fisheye.  I love the fisheye.

The homey Tunji also helped put this together (as you can partly see in the mirror while Tariq is talking), and he has additional clips over at his site…peep ’em.

Kanye West’s Homecoming segment with Lorenzo Zarate

Posted in Artists, News, Videos on July 29th, 2008 by Hyphen

I’m so mad at myself for blogging the trailer to this special last week and then missing most of it when it aired tonight.  I guess if it’s not in the Blackberry, I just forget to do it.  Damn.

Anyway, here’s one segement where Kanye and Sway met up with Lorenzo Zarate, a veteran from the war in Iraq.  Not only did Lorenzo come home with post traumatic stress disorder, but he recently lost his job, his wife is pregnant, and they’re about to be short on their rent.  Luckily, Mr. West, Sway, and MTV stepped in to help him out…big time.  I especially liked that they set him up with a mentor-ship at the hip-hop station in Austin, because honestly, there’s waaaaay too many people out there putting everything they have towards rapping.  Just because technology has afforded you the option, doesn’t mean you should pick up that mic.  Hopefully Lorenzo gets his health in order and his family can have the future they deserve.

I spotted this clip at Eskay‘s so I haven’t searched the MTV site to see if the rest of the show is up there, but it better be.  I caught the last segment live, then searched the schedule trying to DVR the replay.  To my horror, MTV would rather show 21012910219 episodes of From G’s To Gents and America’s Best Dance Crew over something with a purpose and actual substance.  Wack.  At least they commissioned it in the first place though.

The Game on Sound Session

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Sound Session on July 28th, 2008 by Hyphen

During last week’s KUBE Summer Jam, J. Moore and I linked up with The Game before his performance for a quick interview.  We talked all about his upcoming L.A.X. project, why he wants to retire after this album, his ear for beats, the rumor about him joining Westside Connection, his ‘game’ on the court, and more.  He also revealed why his first few rap names were destined for failure and how the Clippers are shaping up this year with Baron Davis returning home to Los Angeles.

You can watch the full interview above (with footage of his performance later that day), or you can download the actual recorded audio (higher quality) through either of these links:

Regardless of any controversy he’s been in over the years, every time I talk with dude, he’s cool as hell.  Plus, he makes good music.  Definitely be on the lookout for L.A.X. dropping soon.

Throwback: Boo & Gotti – Think

Posted in Joints, Throwbacks on July 28th, 2008 by Hyphen

Boo & Gotti

I haven’t done one of these Throwback posts in a minute, but I saw The Smoking Section post up Boo & Gotti’s album from 2003, Perfect Timing, and it reminded me of this song.  The album was definitely slept on when it dropped…and for good reason.  That said, “Think” was my jam for a minute.  The lyrics are pretty trite and forgettable, but that was Boo & Gotti’s whole M.O..  The beat is great though, courtesy of Jazze Pha, and it even features the fat man on the hook.  This was back when he was just mildly annoying, as opposed to his almost Khaled-esque level of buffoonery these days.  Check this out if you remember the start of the chipmunk sample renaissance.  I’m still a sucker for sped up vocal samples…

Wack on multiple levels these days.

Elzhi – Motown 25 & That’s That One (live)

Posted in Artists, Joints, Live Performances on July 25th, 2008 by Hyphen

The best rapper alive (well, maybe that’s Andre…eff a Weezy) performs two songs off his Euro Pass mixtape, “Motown 25” and “That’s That One.”  “Motown 25” might be my favorite song of the year, although part of that is due to Royce’s verse that isn’t in the above performance.  As a bonus, here’s a new Elzhi track off his upcoming album, The Preface, swiped from the Dopehouse:

Elzhi ft. Ayah – “The Leak”

And if you’ve never seen this clip of Elzhi breaking down his patterns, watch it now.
