Bun B at the Democratic National Convention

Posted in Artists, Other Peoples' Interviews, Politics on August 28th, 2008 by Hyphen

(I know what you’re sayin’)

AllHipHop caught up with Bun at the Convention to get his take on hip-hop’s role in the political process.  That’s interesting that he’s planning on going to the Republican National Convention next week in Minnesota too.  I understand where he’s coming from, but you couldn’t pay me to be surrounded by that much ignorance.  As Bill said last night, “thanks, but no thanks.”

To hear more of Bun talking politics, peep the interview I did with him for Sound Session back in April right here.  Video swiped from Eskay.

Wayne's Mugshot

This is like watching a tennis match.  Wayne…Jeezy…Wayne…Jeezy…Wayne.  Who wants the WLotD crown?  It’s a fight to the death.

“Never been fakin’, they are Clay-er than Aiken/
I don’t play-dough, and they love to hate it”
–Lil’ Wayne, “Don’t Tell Me It’s Over”

I do indeed.  This is from the new Gym Class Heroes track that hit the net a few days ago.  If you want to check it out, here you go:

Don Cerino on Loud Favorites

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Other Peoples' Interviews, Videos on August 27th, 2008 by Hyphen

Hahahah. My man Don Cerino recently got featured on Loud Favorites and decided to spit some verses for random people in NYC (the Meatpacking District to be exact…definitely ‘pause‘-worthy). Not only is Don one of my favorite MC’s, but he’s hilarious too. Hit the jump to hear him talk about his background and upcoming projects. Sound Session listeners will remember hearing a joint off that Incise project a few weeks back. Fire.

Black Milk on Hip-Hop Official

Posted in Artists, Other Peoples' Interviews, Videos on August 27th, 2008 by Hyphen

These Hip-Hop Official dudes have good taste.  They keep making great selections for their “artist of the week” spotlight and here’s their newest pick, the one and only Black Milk.  Milk speaks on the Detroit sound and how his music fits into that vibe.  Seattle people: remember that he’ll be coming to Neumos on Sept. 12th with Elzhi at the Red Bull Big Tune Beat Battle…

DJ Revolution shows you his studio

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Videos on August 27th, 2008 by Hyphen

One of the all time greats, DJ Revolution, takes you on a quick tour of his home studio in the first promo video for his upcoming album, King of the Decks.  He also lays down a little freestyle scratch routine for y’all.  Hahah @ the soundproof bedroom.  I can dig it.

Apparently they will be releasing a video a week until the album drops on September 16th.  You lucky bastards down in Los Angeles should definitely hit up the release party on Sept. 19th at The Arena:  Rev, Jazzy Jeff, Dilated Peoples, Bishop Lamont, Strong Arm Steady, Pacific Division, & Crooked I all in one night?  Are you kidding me?

Crossfit W.O.D.

Posted in Sports on August 27th, 2008 by Hyphen

This one doesn’t have a snazzy name, just the workout of the day posted on the official crossfit site.  For time:

30 handstand push ups
40 pull ups
50 kettlebell swings, 1.5 poods (~52 lbs)
60 sit ups
70 burpees

Aight, this one was a bit more than I could chew.  I’ve never done handstands in my life, so I just did 30 ten second stands against a wall to get used to being upside down.  I was able to knock out a few push ups like that too, but I’ll need to practice a LOT to be able to do that freestanding.  That would be bad ass though, so that’s the ultimate goal.

After the handstands, I did the last 4 exercises for time and subbed a 35 lbs dumbbell for the swings.  Pull ups, swings, sit ups = fairly easy.  70 burpees = a bitch.  Finished in 16:43.  Try this one.

Shout to Foundation.

Jeezer

Uh oh, The Recession has leaked.  Jeezy’s coming for Wayne’s crown:

“M.I.-yayo in the kitchen, Scott Storch everywhere/
White Vette, black top, kung fu panda bear (deyyyyyyym!)/
Call me sensei, I got that tae-kwon-dooooo/
On my Angelina sh*t, I want that Brad Pitt dough”
–Young Jeezy, “Welcome Back”

Welcome back indeed, though +1 point for using Storch’s name to refer to cocaine.  I wonder how it feels to be so white that your name is a euphemism for coke.  “Only thing whiter is Brooke Shields” – Cam’Ron

Rolling Stone retrospective on Lauryn’s Miseducation

Posted in Artists, Other Peoples' Interviews on August 26th, 2008 by Hyphen

Miseducation

Oh sorry, not Lauryn…Ms. Hill.  *shakes head*.  Since it’s the 10 year anniversary of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill dropping, Rolling Stone spoke to many of the people involved in making the record, including John Legend, D’Angelo, Pras, her husband Rohan Marley, and Hill herself.  If you’re as big a fan of this album as I am (top 5 dead or alive), you’ll enjoy a lot of the behind the scenes stories.  You’ll also be saddened by the outcome.  I really hope we get a legit sophomore record from Lauryn, but that still seems unlikely.  Having interviewed Clef a few times in the last year, that Fugee record doesn’t seem plausible either.  It all depends on L-Boogie and she’s just not at the right place to do this again.

Check out the article here…highly recommended.  Thanks to Eskay for the heads up.

UNDRCRWN Obama shirt

Posted in Goods, Politics on August 26th, 2008 by Hyphen

Obama shirt

There have been a lot of great Obama shirts during the campaign so far (I’m partial to my “Ninjas For Obama” jawn myself), but this one might have just taken the cake. UNDRCRWN recreated Vince Carter’s epic posterization of 7’2″ French center (and 1999 Knicks draft pick…good call fellas) Frederic Weis in the 2000 Olympics, appropriately substituting Obama and McCain for the players:

The funniest part of that clip is actually that Vin Baker was a part of USA Basketball. I forgot all about that. So, what store in town is selling these and wants to hook me up?

Spotted on Hypebeast…and just now on Spike Lee at the Democratic National Convention. That’s a good look.

Termanology – Politics As Usual (EPK)

Posted in Artists, Videos on August 26th, 2008 by Hyphen

I’ve been a big Termanology fan since before Sound Session even started and if you’ve listened over the years, you’ve heard us play a whole bunch of his joints. Finally, it’s almost time for his debut LP, Politics As Usual, to drop and here’s the EPK to help get the word out. The project features appearances by Prodigy, Bun B, Sheek, Freeway, Lil’ Fame, and more, plus production by an all-star cast including DJ Premier, Hi-Tek, Alchemist, Pete Rock, Havoc, Buckwild, Nottz, Easy Mo Bee, and Large Professor. I mean, damn. All y’all complaining that the east coast fell off need to slap yourselves and cop Term’s album on September 30th.
