Illa J ft. Guilty Simpson – R U Listenin’

Illa J

J Dilla’s younger brother Illa J is prepping the release of his debut, Yancey Boys, and he just dropped the first 12″.  “We Here” has been going around the net for a minute, but since we premiered the b-side, “R U Listenin'” with Guilty Simpson, on Sound Session last night, I thought I’d post it up as well.  This joint is crazy.

That beat right there?  Woooooooooow.  Reminds me of his brother’s remix for Crustation’s “Purple“…what y’all know about that jawn?

One half of Seattle’s own Common Market, RA Scion, came through Sound Session yesterday and we recorded it for y’all.  We chopped it up about their new Tobacco Road album, their unique release party coming up on Thursday at Neumos, their experiences performing at the protests of the Democratic National Convention in Denver, and more.  You can watch the video above, or if you prefer just the audio, grab it here:

El Prez – The Daily Show (mixtape)

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes on September 6th, 2008 by Hyphen

El Prez Front

My man El Prez from Los Angeles has been leaking new joints recently, but he just dropped the official mixtape for y’all to check out entitled The Daily Show.  If you’re a Sound Session listener, you may remember Prez from his “UAINTUPONTHIS!” joint with the U-N-I homies.  And if you remember that, you know dude is dope.  I would write more, but I need to get some ish ready for Rock The Bells later today at the Gorge.  Matter of fact, I think I’ll bump this on the way down to the show…

Tracklisting and download link after the jump! Shout to What Eye Thought for the drop.

Mikkey Halsted – Uncrowned King (mixtape)

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes on September 5th, 2008 by Hyphen

cover

If you’re as big of a Kanye fan as I am, you remember a lot of his early material featuring a dope Chicago MC named Mikkey. Well after a brief stint with Cash Money Records (I still have no idea why he signed there), Mikkey returned to his roots and has released a ton of great songs over the past few years. He just compiled a mixtape called Uncrowned King, which is filled with new and previously unreleased material featuring collaborations with ‘Ye, Common, No ID, and more.

Thanks to Drew over at FakeShoreDrive, you can download the tape right here.

Sarah Palin, the NRA, and hunters get the gasface

Posted in News, Politics, Videos on September 5th, 2008 by Hyphen

Along with all her other moral standings that I find reprehensible, one thing I really despise about Sarah Palin is that she’s such a staunch supporter of the NRA and hunting. I’ve always been an animal lover and sympathetic to animal activism, so I can’t agree with anyone who enjoys hunting or fishing for entertainment. Theoretically, if you’re killing a creature for sustenance, I can live with that. If you’re just murdering creatures for entertainment, I think there’s something seriously wrong with you.

Also, I find it curious that a lot of hunters are also ultra-religious, when the Bible clearly states “thou shall not kill.” How do they justify that? Don’t animals have souls just like we do? How can they claim to follow the word of God when they can’t even follow the Commandments?

This woman cannot be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

More hypocrisy and lies

Posted in Politics, Videos on September 5th, 2008 by Hyphen

One of the best things about living in the day of digital archiving is that everything is on record. You can’t expect to say one thing today, contradict it tomorrow, and then claim it never happened. Well, I guess if you’re John McCain and the Republicans, you can and do. Self-ethering at its finest.

Wack Lyric of the Day, 9-5-08

Posted in Artists, Wack Lyric of the Day on September 5th, 2008 by Hyphen

wayne

Ending the first week of the all-Wayne WLotD month:

“Tell that beef I’m Burger King, I represent that Saints sign/
I’m so high, I could paint signs”
–Lil’ Wayne, “Let Us Pray”

He abuses those “I’m so high…” punchlines like crazy.
