SNSS

What a weekend.  Between the extra day off because of the holiday, the start of college football (and the continuation of futbol abroad), the end of the Democratic National Convention, McCain’s awful vice president pick (and the ensuing scandals), and Seattle’s annual Bumbershoot Festival, I was ridiculously busy.  Here’s this week’s Sound Session though, better late than never!

We played some of the illest joints out right now from artists like 88 Keys, Jazmine Sullivan, Murs, DJ Babu, Wale, and Royce The 5’9″ and debuted the crazy lead single from our homey, Seattle’s own, Jake One.  We also world premiered a new song from Fashawn featuring Thurzday of U-N-I (what up Thurz & Y-O!) and gave out a ton of tickets for our last Rock The Bells giveaway.  Last but not least, we had an interview with the lovely Janelle Monae.  I managed to grab some footage from her concert here in Seattle last week, so be sure to check that out along with the full interview.

Wack Lyric of the Day, 9-2-08

Wayne

Day two of Wayne’s WLotD month features a little something off a newly released atrocity that hit the net last week:

“Boy, you know I’m on my bullsh*t, slip on a banana/
You just such a (?), shootin’ like Bonanza/
Dirty like that hamper/
Boy, you are not a man, you are just Amanda/
I bet that chopper bring em all propaganda/
Come on world, bare with me like a panda”
–Lil’ Wayne, “Guerilla”

Wow.  Did they mean to title the song “Gorilla” too?  Seeing as how there are repeated references to apes and bananas, and none to anything army related, I’ma go ahead and guess yes.  Sigh.

Weekend Workouts (Rainstorm + Tabata Fight Gone Bad)

Posted in Sports, Videos on September 1st, 2008 by Hyphen

Even though it was a holiday, this was one of the busiest weekends I’ve had in a minute.  Thanks to the fine folks over at Foundation Crossfit, I was able to squeeze in two bad ass workouts.  First up, from Saturday:

Tabata bottom to bottom squats (8 rounds of 20 secs on, 10 off, hold for the ‘rest’)

then as far as you can go in 20 minutes, in order:
100m sprint
25 burpees
30 pull ups
40 sit ups
50 kettlebell swings
60 second L-sit
70 push ups
800m run
90 second active hang
100 box jumps

I got through 700m of the 800m run before time expired.  I love these kind of “checklist” workouts because you get a real sense of accomplishment as you’re flying through the exercises.  Next up, tonight’s workout was “Tabata Fight Gone Bad” (see the video above):

8 rounds of 20 seconds on, 10 seconds off, with 1 minute rest in between exercises.  Take your lowest score in each round and that’s your score for the exercise:

Sumo Deadlift High Pull (75lbs)
Box Jumps
Push Press (75lbs)
Wall Ball
Row (count calories burned)

I finished with 38 (in order: 10, 8, 6, 9, 5).  Probably could have bumped that up by one or two, but this is a hard workout.  Very fun though.  Try it, or if you need some help getting started, hit up the Foundation fam!

Little Brother – Step My Game Up (live)

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Videos on September 1st, 2008 by Hyphen

As mentioned previously, Little Brother rocked the Key Club in Los Angeles last week and the homegirl Mariko recorded some dope clips of their performance.  Above is the insta-classic, “Step My Game Up” (complete with a hilarious intro from Phonte), and videos of “Lovin’ It,” “Nobody Like Me,” “Extrahard,” and “Sirens” can be found here.  I can’t wait to see LB at Rock The Bells this weekend…

Wayne wins

Wayne and Jeezy battled it out last week, but I think we all know there’s only one winner loser here.  The undisputed king of wack lyrics is none other than Dwayne Carter.  As a prize, Weezy wins a continuous streak of WLotD, possibly for the entire month of September.  We’ll see how it goes.  First up, a contribution from my Ill Vibes fam:

“And my jewelry is louder than an engine sound/
Big ass rocks like on the ground/
Dirty like socks that on the ground”
–Lil’ Wayne, “Let It Rock”

This is off one of Wayne’s countless guest appearances, Kevin Rudolf’s “Let It Rock.”  LOL @ paying this dude a ton of money to drop a wack verse, in hopes that his name alone makes the song a hit.  Doesn’t that plan backfire if Wayne has 10 new guest spots a week?  Well, I guess it doesn’t backfire for Wayne.  He gets syrup money for the next decade.  KEEP WACK ALIVE!
