LL Cool J ft. Wyclef Jean – Mr. President (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos, Politics on October 21st, 2008 by Hyphen

Some simply visuals for a web video of LL’s “Mr. President” off his new album, Exit 13.  Is it good?  Ehh.  Does LL’s rhyme style work in 2008?  Ehhhhh.  Do I support him making a song with at least a cursory amount of substance?  Absolutely.

I don’t even hate wackness.  I hate wackness that glorifies other forms of wackness.  If your heart’s in the right place, I’ll let it slide all day.

New Jack Hustle on Sound Session

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Sound Session on October 21st, 2008 by Hyphen

A little while back, I mentioned chopping it up with Shawn Jackson and my old homey Newman from Giant Panda during the Seattle stop of their tour with People Under The Stairs and Common Market.  What better time to post that Sound Session interview up than today, when their New Jack Hustle group album, Soundcheck, officially goes on sale?

Check out this interview to hear Shawn and Newman talk all about how New Jack Hustle came together and what they wanted to do with Soundcheck.  Among other topics, they discussed the unique recording process behind the album, how it differs from their past work, their backgrounds, the recent explosion of the Los Angeles hip-hop scene, and more.  Plus, you can peep one of the songs off the album, “Ronald,” featuring the criminally slept on Versatyl from the Lifesavas.  Enjoy:

Sound Session #177 (10-19-08)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on October 21st, 2008 by Hyphen

SNSS

Yes, yes y’all.  Here’s the newest edition of the greatest radio show on corporate radio, Sunday Night Sound Session for you to enjoy at the office, in the gym, on the commute, etc..  We played some of the dopest songs out there by people like John Legend, Butta Verses, Black Milk, Planet Asia, Murs, Foreign Exchange, and more.  We also ran two incredibly ill singles that you’ll hear all over the place in the coming months, John Legend’s “No Other Love” and Kanye’s “Heartless.”  For fellow diehard ‘Ye fans…does his beat on “Heartless” remind anyone else of the track he made for his Jagged Edge “Let’s Get Married” remix (same beat he used for Rhymefest’s “Fight With The Best”)?  Super dope regardless.

Along with all the good music (no pun), we gave out tickets for upcoming concerts with Q-Tip, the Cool Kids, Pacific Division, B.o.B., Dyme Def, and the Massive Monkees.  Plus, Microsoft hooked us up with some custom Murs and Kidz In The Hall Zunes (what up Paul!) for a few lucky winners.  If you’re in the Northwest, you really should be listening live…we reward our faithful listeners.

Lastly, we aired an interview with Newman (of Giant Panda) and Shawn Jackson, known collectively as New Jack Hustle.  Their album, Soundcheck, is in stores today so go cop that!

Shout to my dude David from the Barack Obama campaign as well for coming through to tell y’all how to get involved in the final 2 weeks of this historic election.  We’re almost there.  Yes We Can.

What can I say…it was a big show.  Peep it:

Redman

It’s never fun to put a legend in WLotD, but this line just confused me:

“It’s Redman, hurry, my flow, hot curry/
Only dude with Pro Tools and a Blackberry”
–Redman, “This Is It (Showoff Remix)”

I know like 10 people with Pro Tools and Blackberries, so I know Redman knows a million…wtf.  Am I missing some alternate meaning?  Eh well, always good to hear the Funk Doc rhyme.

Brand new visuals for “New Shades” from New Jack Hustle (Newman of Giant Panda & Shawn Jackson) off their Soundcheck album for your viewing pleasure.  Don’t forget to peep their last piece too, which currently holds the title of “dopest video for a song that’s not even on the album.”  I’ll post up my full interview with the homies later this evening.  Soundcheck in stores tomorrow!

GGR

It’s been a minute since Phonte and Brainchild have graced us with an episode of GGR, but believe me, it’s tough to do radio shows when you’re constantly working on other projects.  In the latest edition, Brainchild kills the mix and Tay waxes poetic about his top 10 “black coffees.”  Check it out:

  2. The Cool Kids “Delivery Man”
  3. FDR “Puff Puff Pass”
  4. Erykah Badu “The Healer”
  5. Digable Planets “Dial 7 (Axioms Of Creamy Spies)”

  7. Lloyd Chalmers “I’m Gonna Love You Just A Little Bit More”
  8. Black Milk “Purple Track 6″
  9. Robert Glasper “J Dillalude” (Simon S Extended Edit)
  10. Madlib “Ashby Road”

Shad – Brother (Watching) (video)

Posted in Artists, Joints, Music Videos on October 19th, 2008 by Hyphen

This is my ish right now and since I’m going to play it on Sound Session tonight, I thought I’d post up the video.  Yeah, I’m late on it, but sometimes it takes a second for international hip-hop to catch on in the States.  Shad is dope as hell though, so better late than never!
