Sound Session #194 (2-15-09)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on February 16th, 2009 by Hyphen

Man, how great would it be if every Monday was a holiday?  It’s a lot easier to host a late Sunday night show, sleep in the next day, and then post up the archive when you don’t have to run to work first thing in the morning.  I’m not mad at this at all.

Last night was a pretty fun show, though I was a little bored with nobody else in the studio (if you couldn’t tell by this post).  J will be back from his travels next week, but in the meantime, I played some dope tracks from folks like M.O.P., Cormega, Drake, Kid Cudi, the CunninLynguists, Mos Def, K’Naan, Big Boi, and I might have debuted a new Mayer Hawthorne (DJ Haircut) track too.  Not sure if anyone’s played that one yet, but, obviously, it’s dope.  Peep it all below:

Show #194 (2-15-09)

  1. M.O.P. – “Blow The Horns”
  2. Blame One ft. Sean Price – “Disturbed”
  3. Cormega – “Maybach Music Freestyle”
  4. Drake – “Say You Will Freestyle (Say What’s Real)”
  5. Sol ft. Philharmonic – “Spliff” (Local Artist)
  6. Kid Cudi – “Day N Nite”
  7. J. Period ft. Consequence & Kid Cudi – “Buggin’ Out 2009 (Tribute Mix)”
  8. Mic Legacy ft. Skyzoo – “The Radio”
  9. Focus ft. Frank Nitti, T3, Baatin, & Illa J – “Homage To Dilla”
  10. CunninLynguists – “Never Come Down (The Brownie Song)”
  11. Big Tone ft. Blu – “A Song Called Triumph”
  12. DJ Deckstream ft. Mos Def – “Life Is Good”
  13. Wale ft. Young Chris & Tre – “Nightlife”
  14. Spaceman – “This Is That Fire” (Local Artist)
  15. P.A. ft. Emilio Rojas & F.T. – “Illy Bop”
  16. Rhymefest – “Exodus 5:1”
  17. K’Naan – “Somalia”
  18. U-N-I – “Night Nurse (Remix)”
  19. Big Boi – “Ringtone”
  20. Avatar Young Blaze ft. Lil’ Wayne – “King of the Streets” (Local Artist)
  21. Marsha Ambrosius ft. Little Brother – “Sunshine”
  22. Foreign Exchange ft. Darien Brockington – “Take Off The Blues”
  23. Mayer Hawthorne – “I Wish It Would Rain”

Bored in the studio

Posted in Joints, Random Ish, Videos on February 16th, 2009 by Hyphen

This is what happens when nobody else is in the studio on SNSS and I’m bored as hell.  Plus, I needed a short video to practice editing with iMovie on the new MacBook Pro I recently added to the arsenal.  I’ll post up last night’s Sound Session later today, but as you can see, I was busy completely wasting my time.

And yeah, I need to get a little lower on the handstand push ups.  Freestanding would be nice too, but I’m not at that Jackie Chan Andrew Bueno level yet.  What up Dru!

Anyone know how to maintain the highest level of quality for Flip Cam movies edited through iMovie?  I converted the .avi to .mov through Quicktime so it would open in iMovie, then exported in what I thought was decent quality, but it looks pretty fuzzy.  Or should I man up and just edit the .avi’s directly in Final Cut Pro?  I need to get this U-N-I interview put together and posted up asap…

Valentine’s…

^^Perhaps my all-time favorite. There are countless more, but these are some of the classics.

Happy Valentine’s Day to y’all…Happy Birthday to me.

Robin Thicke – Dreamworld (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on February 13th, 2009 by Hyphen

Great pre-Valentine’s Day video from quite possibly the best male R&B singer out right now.  Who else is up there?  John Legend, definitely…Raheem and Dwele, yeah…who am I forgetting?  Either way, Robin is killing it these days by singing with more passion than virtually everyone else in his lane.

Black Milk ft. Royce Da 5’9″ – Losing Out (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on February 13th, 2009 by Hyphen

Black Milk and Royce just dropped the visuals for one of the best songs of the past year, “Losing Out,” of Black’s Tronic project.  Just as you’d expect from a Detroit video in the dead of winter, the D is looking real grimy here.  My only complaint is that I would have loved to see the video ride out for the extra minute of the album version where Black absolutely murders the sample.  Perhaps that would have been hard to match with images, but that might be my favorite part of the song itself.  Either way, dopeness.

Shout to the whole D, particular Hex…the most entertaining person to follow on all of Twitter.

Termanology – Circulate (100 Bars) (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on February 12th, 2009 by Hyphen

The second of director Court Dunn’s 4 part series on the elements of hip-hop highlights the graff writers and also acts as the video for Termanology’s “Circulate (100 Bars)” joint off his Dilla tribute tape, If Heaven Was A Mile Away.  Watch the first one with Camp Lo and the breakers right here if you missed it.  Term rips this apart.

Shout to Termy Term, Court, Dan, and the whole ST click.

Evidence ft. Blu, Phonte, & Will.I.Am – For Whom The Bell Tolls (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on February 11th, 2009 by Hyphen

After dropping videos for almost every track off his excellent Layover EP, Ev is back with what I believe is the final clip for the project.  As expected, this one doesn’t disappoint either.  When has Decon ever steered you wrong on the visuals (or anywhere else for that matter)?

Obama addresses the economic crisis

Posted in News, Politics, Videos on February 11th, 2009 by Hyphen

It’s time to put the smack down on these Republicans and their sickening behavior in the House and Senate. Not only are they being contrarian just for the sake of arguing, they have absolutely no legs to stand on.  When you’ve run the country into its lowest point since the Great Depression and have made wrong decision after wrong decision, your opinions and theories are null and void.  You had your chance and you failed…epically.

I’m glad Barack is playing nice with these fools, but they’ll soon find out that all their whining and complaining is going to be moot as he gets to work.  I just wish they’d spare us the show.  STFU and sit your ass down in the backseat.  You drove the country off the pavement at every fork in the road, and now you’re trying to tell us how to drive.  Why on earth should anyone listen to you?

Do your thing Barack and let’s get this headed in the right direction.

Strong Arm Steady ft. Chace Infinite, Planet Asia, & Affion Crockett – Black History (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on February 10th, 2009 by Hyphen

In honor of Black History Month, the Blacksmith family has recorded this dope song and video where Phil Da Agony, Chace Infinite, Planet Asia, and Affion Crockett spit about their family heritage.  I’m not a huge fan of the beat, but the verses give you a little biography of each dude’s family tree, which is something dope that you rarely hear from MC’s.

Shout to Tunji for sending this one through as well.  Hit up the YOTB for more…

Blackstar at the House of Blues

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Videos on February 10th, 2009 by Hyphen

Tunji just shot over this footage of Talib joining Mos for a little impromptu Blackstar performance at the House of Blues from last night down in Los Angeles.  Is it strange that hearing “Respiration” drop still gives me goosebumps a decade after it first came out?

Peep more over at the Year of the Blacksmith.
