The Clipse on Sound Session

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Sound Session, Videos on October 27th, 2009 by Hyphen

(watch in higher quality on HyphenTV)

As I mentioned, Malice and Pusha T recently made their second appearance on Sound Session, dropping by last month to chop it up with yours truly.  We talked extensively about their upcoming Till The Casket Drops album, including breakdowns of their singles with Kanye West, Cam’ron, and Pharrell. They also looked back on their past work, detailed the success of their Play Cloths fashion line, doled out advice to younger artists, and much more.

To listen to the entire interview, including a lot of topics we didn’t include in the video above, peep:

The Thornton brothers are about to drop a 3rd classic album, believe that.  Be sure to cop it on Dec. 8th…

Sound Session #230 (10-25-09)

Posted in Artists, Episodes, Interviews, Sound Session on October 27th, 2009 by Hyphen

Time is absolutely flying.  It’s about to be Halloween?  WTFFFFFFFFFFF, fail.

Another fun show this week, complete with a great soundtrack from artists like J. Cole, the CunninLynguists, Kidz In The Hall, Skyzoo, Vstylez, Paten Locke, Fashawn, Joss Stone, Wyclef Jean, Extended Famm, and more.  Shout to the homies Clockwork for coming through the studio and also Emilio Rojas for calling in from NYC, fresh off his victory celebration for the Yankees.

Is it wrong that I don’t even mind that the Evil Empire made it to the World Series this year?  It feels like it’s been so long, I’m almost…*gasp*…rooting for them.  Ok, perhaps I can’t go that far, but I’m fairly apathetic towards this year’s series.  One team that just won and the other team where everyone pretty much has a ring (though I’d like to see CC get one, so he can CC all the girls he see sees around town)?  Eh.

I’ll just root for good baseball and hope it goes 7.  I bet Cleveland is maaaaad salty looking at those Game 1 starters though…

Adrian Peterson ethers William Gay

Posted in Sports, Videos on October 26th, 2009 by Hyphen

Shout to Smoking Section for reminding me of this play from the last NFL weekend.  I still remember the first time seeing high school footage of AP and realizing he just ran differently than anyone I had ever seen.  Wow.

Sidenote, I believe “Gay” is one of the “potentially offensive” words that’s banned from being used in customized NFL jerseys.  Laughable really, especially if you’re William and you want to press up some jerseys for your family.  WTF.

That said, pause @ William Gay and “maybe this guy can play both ways” in the same sentence.  Just sayin’.

Raheem DeVaughn ft. Ludacris – Bulletproof (video)

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Live Performances, Music Videos, Sound Session on October 26th, 2009 by Hyphen

I heard this video dropped, but I hadn’t had a chance to peep it yet until the homey Todd Angkasuwan alerted me via Twitter:

Yessir!  If you don’t remember, we had Raheem in studio last year for Sound Session and he blessed us with a little a capella preview of “Bulletproof,” peep game:

Todd definitely did the song justice too.  Great record and great visuals!

Hey Young World

Posted in Random Ish on October 26th, 2009 by Edwin

I’m Edwin Ortiz. I’ll be helping Hyphen out with keeping this site updated, whether it be a dope mixtape, footage from concerts, or exclusive content from SNSS. Also, with the approval from Hyphen, I’ll periodically post articles that I feel warrant a discussion. In this way, readers can sound off about the current happenings of hip-hop.

Without getting into too much detail, here’s a little info about me: I’m from the Northwest, born and raised. I’m double majoring in journalism and history at the University of Washington. Along with blogging duties here, I write for HipHopDX.com and have contributed to other various sites such as KevinNottingham.com.

I look forward to building with the viewership/readership Hyphen has already received with TAOD, and I hope that this sites reach can expand through quality content and commentary.

And remember; Holla at a playa when ya see him in the streets. (c) Stuart Scott

The Clipse speak on “Popular Demand (Popeyes)” on Sound Session

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Sound Session, Videos on October 25th, 2009 by Hyphen

The Clipse rolled through the Sound Session studio last month and spoke with me all about their upcoming album, Till The Casket Drops.  I’ll be posting up the full interview soon, but in the interim, seeing as how their “Popular Demand (Popeyes)” track with Cam’ron leaked last week and set the net ablaze, I thought I would toss up this part for y’all.

In the clip, Pusha and Malice discuss how the track came together, their motivation behind the record, and how Cam dissed them in 2002 by declining their offer to be on the “Grindin'” remix.  Download the track here:

Shad ft. Jermiside & Destruments – The Calling (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on October 24th, 2009 by Hyphen

This might be the most beautiful music video I’ve seen in a minute, and I watch a ton at the day job.  I don’t believe Shad and the homies are using this as an official music video, but it would get my vote.  Great stuff.

Grab the EP this track is on right here and NYC folks better not miss Shad’s first performance in the Big Apple:

Ryan Lewis – Fake Empire

Posted in Art, Artists, Joints, Videos on October 24th, 2009 by Hyphen

As I was saying, the talent in the 206 is immense right now.  I meant to put this on TAOD when Ryan first sent it to me, but I failed.  Thankfully, 2DopeBoyz posted it up and reminded me about it.

In Ryan’s own words:

All summer I’ve been working on my thesis project to graduate from the UW. It’s another still-image motion picture like the 2Pac Vs. Franz Ferdinand mash-up I made last year. It features Macklemore and a few other people you may know (list below). Take in mind this is version one. Between limited access, finances, etc I couldn’t really pursue a lot of the ideas I originally envisioned in efforts to make it epic. I feel like the music got there more than the storyline. However, we may do an improved remix of it for the VS. (Macklemore/RyanLewis) EP featuring Mack rapping and a revised production more like a music video, shot with actual video.

It was shot entirely with regular still-image cameras (Canon 5D, Canon 5D Mark II, Nikon D300 and a Nikon D3), batch-edited in Photoshop and produced in Final Cut Pro. The music was probably the biggest Pro-Tools session I’ve ever ran. Although it samples the original Fake Empire’s piano and backing vocals, everything else was recorded live over numerous sessions.

Thanks a ton to everyone who helped:

The National – Fake Empire (Sample)
JkoePhoto.com (Jason Koenig) – Photographer
MazagranPhoto.com (Johnny Valencia) – Photographer
Myspace.com/Macklemore (Ben Haggerty) – Main Actor
Tricia Davis – Actor
Kevin Veatch – Electric Guitar, Electric Bass, Engineer
Andrew Joslyn – Violins and plucking
Zach Fleury – Main Drums, Percussion
Jonah Peters – Percussion
Ryan Lewis – Music Production, Photography, Film Production, Drums, Key Strings, Organ

We shot 100 + strangers portraits who choose a sticker that pertained to an organization/company that has either consumed them or acted as an alternative means of communication to operate with society.

Group Vocals –

P Smoov (Mad Rad)
Rosanna Veatch
Zach Fleury
Sol
Xperience
Macklemore
Anna Clausen
Isabella Du Graf
and more.

Also, Ryan has been working with a dope MC/vocalist named Symmetry for about 3 years now and I believe they’re just about to drop their full project for the masses.  Here’s a taste:

Fresh Espresso ft. Grynch, Macklemore, & Gatsby – Something New (Remix)

Posted in Artists, Joints, Music Videos, Remixes on October 24th, 2009 by Hyphen

For those who aren’t aware, the talent in Seattle is crazy right now.  One of my favorite releases of the year, local or national, was Fresh Espresso‘s Glamour, and Rik Rude & P-Smoov just enlisted Grynch, Macklemore, and Gatsby for the remix.  Video by Stephan Gray.  Bananas.

Dave Chappelle at the Laugh Factory

Posted in Comedy, Videos on October 24th, 2009 by Hyphen

I’ve been working like crazy this week and finally have a little time to catch up with everything that went down.  So far, it seems like the highlight was that the world’s funniest human, Dave Chappelle, performed an impromptu set at the Laugh Factory in NYC.  I’ve only seen this Flip Cam footage, but we need more to leak.  This is hilarious, especially at the end…
