The Audacity of Dope

This video dropped a few weeks ago, but you already know what #inboxmadness is all about. Better late than never though, especially since this Fly.Union record is one of my favorite songs of the year.  Crazy beat, nice verses, and a catchy, smooth hook.

When I saw that Monica released a new song with Lil’ Kim this week, I joked that it felt like ’96.  The chuckle was interrupted when I hit play and heard a reworked Biggie sample that I should have seen coming.  At least Kim dropped this line, stating explicitly what we all knew for years.  Stay strapped kids.

No drums, just realness.

Not really feeling writing a wrap up of this week’s SNSS on a 4th of July, so I’ll keep it super simple.

I find it kind of comical that so many people, myself and even Lupe included, had issues with various elements of L.A.S.E.R.S. and yet it’s been an incredibly successful commercial album for him.  “The Show Goes On” is one of the biggest chart topping records of the year and the new single, “Out Of My Head,” is getting considerable airplay as well.  Hopefully that continues now that the video is out.

I’ve been sleeping on this cat, but no more. This is raw!

If you’ve been coming to this blog for a while, you already know all about Shad. Even if you do, this interview actually gets in to some personal topics that you don’t often hear him talk about. And if you’re curious why folks think Shad is so dope, check the rhyme:

I hope youngsters see the absurdity of these corny a capella battles and they eventually die off.

One of the best beats of the last year or so…Apollo Brown is a PROBLEM.

While I don’t anticipate ever being able to play this on Sound Session since a clean version would essentially turn in to an instrumental, this joint is dope. One of the reasons why we should be rooting for Kendrick to continue to blow up is that unlike many of the other new artists, K-Dot seems to take more chances with his music.  There’s a lot of talented cats killing it right now, but not too many seem to have the ability to make a 5 mic hip-hop classic.  Kendrick does.  We’ll see if he’s able to reach that potential, but with the release of Section.80, he continues his ascent.
