The Audacity of Dope

Another fun week on SNSS, as we were joined in studio by some of our favorite artists from Seattle: Nacho Picasso, Scribes, and SPAC3MAN, plus one of the dopest up-and-coming dudes in the game, Atlanta’s ForteBowie, called in to chop it up with us.  We also played new records from J. Cole, Bas, Planet Asia, Childish Gambino, Oddisee, Thunderbird Gerard, Piu Piu, Naomi Pilgrim, Shad, Drake, and more.

Outside of music, you do realize we have the NFL in full swing, college football coming down the stretch, soccer leagues and World Cup qualifying all around the world, the World Series, college basketball about to begin, and the NBA starting tonight, right?  It really doesn’t get any better.

First track I’ve really enjoyed from Drake’s OVO signing, PARTYNEXTDOOR. Definitely prefer when he rhymes in a more normal voice than that Future influenced warble, but I dig it. Visuals didn’t hurt either…

If you aren’t familiar with one of the best cultural critics we have in hip-hop, this gives a good introduction for what Jay Smooth does on and offline. Let this play and learn something. I guarantee you’ll be inclined to check out more of his stuff, and you can do so right here.

For the second time, Kanye West kicked off an international tour here in Seattle and while the Yeezus show wasn’t as amazing as his Glow In The Dark tour (best show I’ve ever seen, btw), it definitely shut down the city over the weekend.  I swear, damn near everyone in Seattle was there and despite some issues that might be expected with opening night (missed effect queues, inconsistent sound, a stolen equipment truck?…sorry Vancouver), it was a great night.  If you’re a Kanye fan, and more importantly a fan of the Yeezus project, then you’ll love it.  It’s an amazing spectacle either way…

We had to discuss the show and dedicated the last set of this week’s SNSS to the man himself.  Over the past decade, who else has released more quality music and grown with each release, than Kanye?  I’ll wait.

I assume this was filmed, at least in part, during John’s wedding to model (and surprisingly funny Twitter personality) Chrissy Teigen in Italy, since I think a few of these shots are of Lake Como (some footage at the end as well).  Not to get all TMZ, but apparently John sang this to her during the wedding ceremony since it was a song he specifically wrote for her.

I’ve always thought that “Ordinary People” was a timeless, classic record that we would all look back on like some of the best work from Stevie, Marvin, etc. and while I don’t think this one is quite as strong, it’s a great ballad.  I watched some of my co-workers literally cry after listening to it so I’d say it’s almost a universal favorite for the ladies.
