The Audacity of Dope

Big news for our station this week as we announced that our old friend, Eddie Francis, will be returning to host KUBE 93’s night show starting September 2nd!  To celebrate and help spread the news, Eddie came by SNSS this week and hung out with J. Moore, myself, and DV One.  Felt great to be surrounded by family and play some dope music for our extended family, you guys.  On this week’s show, we ran cuts from Vince Staples, G-Unit, Spesh, DJ Premier, Saigon, Porter Ray, STL GLD, Rapper Big Pooh, OnCue, Drake, MINH, 1-O.A.K., Azad Right, Ian Kamau, J. Headed to Cali this week and taking off in a few hours, so I wanted to get this week’s episode of SNSS up for y’all right away.  Good show featuring some dope new music from artists like Common, Vince Staples, Dilated Peoples, Dave B, Bas, J. Cole, Dom Kennedy, King Reign, Silk Rhodes, Kool G Rap, Epidemic & Tantu, Ian Kamau, and more.  Plus, our good buddy Nacho Picasso co-hosted the episode and helped provide some levity on a night where our thoughts are on the craziness occurring in Ferguson, Missouri.  Along those lines, and in honor of Marcus Garvey’s birthday, we ended the show with a classic Black Star throwback.

Big show this week on SNSS as we had a bunch of folks stop by the studio and ran lots of dope tracks, as usual.  Before we get into that though, I have send a “fat shout” (© DJ Clue) to my brother Tunji and his beautiful bride, Rochelle, on their marriage over the weekend!  I had the honor of attending and it was truly an incredible day, hanging with homies and celebrating love high above the beaches in the Malibu hills.  Just awesome.

As for our SNSS guests this week, first, we were joined by Aaron Walker-Loud and Atuanya Priester, who discussed their “Timeless” project, an initiative focused on creating “greater equity and access to quality arts education for Seattle area youth.”  If you’re not down with that, you’re just not human.  More information on how you can get involved via their Indiegogo page here.

Second, two of the dopest up and coming MC’s from the town, Donte Peace and KillemAll Coop, came through to discuss their new projects.  Be on the lookout for both these guys, trust me.  Last, but not least, the homey DJ Trackstar was in Seattle on tour with Killer Mike & El-P, so he dropped by for an update on Run The Jewels, his new No ID mixtape, and some secondhand accounts of the craziness happening in his former hometown of St. Louis right now.  The world is crazy, be safe and love each other y’all.

Two SNSS updates back to back!  Here’s episode #477, where we played new records from Camp Lo, M.O.P., Cormega, AZ, Redman, Styles, G-Unit, Common, DTMD, Your Old Droog, Macklemore, FKA twigs, Sam Smith, Majid Jordan, and more.  In honor of Jay-Z and Beyonce performing in Seattle last week…and obviously not seeing him perform some of his older classics…we hopped in the way back machine for a throwback set of some Jay-Z classics.  The man has so much quality material, it’s really ridiculous when you start thinking about all the records…

We were also joined in studio by one of the most buzz-worthy artists in hip-hop right now, Seattle’s own Sam Lachow.  Every month, another major label calls me to ask about Sam, but so far, he’s been able to build everything up independently.  It’s a great route if you can do it and Sam’s excelling, with his new album, Huckleberry, reaching the iTunes top 5 hip-hop albums.  Go cop that.

Last, but not least, Seattle veteran Draze came through to play a record called “The Hood Ain’t The Same,” and speak on the important issue of gentrification.  One of the more enjoyable conversations we’ve had on the show recently.
