The Audacity of Dope

Due to some technical issues with the equipment in the KUBE studio, apologies but unfortunately we don’t have an archive of this week’s SNSS episode.  It’s a shame, as we played lots of good record from artists like Wax Tailor & Ghostface Killah, Knox Brown & Gallant, AlunaGeorge, Travis Scott, Isaiah Rashad & Syd, Mac Miller & Kendrick Lamar, RetcH, JAHKOY & Schoolboy Q, Brent Faiyaz, H.E.R., Tony Tillman, De La Soul & Estelle & Pete Rock, and more.  DJ Nphared sat in as a guest co-host for the 2nd week in a row and we reminisced over Lil Wayne’s true glory days, the old SQAD mixtape series, with a random, but classic, throwback freestyle.

With the NFL regular season kicking off, the Colin Kaepernick sparked protests continuing to build steam, and Sunday marking the 15th anniversary of 9/11 (and one of hip-hop’s classic albums), it felt like a pretty heavy week to digest, so I put the Bat Signal up for the homey DJ Nphared to come through and co-host this week’s SNSS episode.  We chatted through all the above, in between playing new records from folks like Jay IDK, Travis Scott, Kendrick Lamar, RetcH, Billy Danze, Amine, Anderson .Paak & BJ The Chicago Kid, Isaiah Rashad, Mac Miller (and a surprising SNSS debut appearance for Ariana Grande), and more.  Obviously our throwback had to cover that classic 9/11 album as well…

If we had a holiday every Monday, it’d be a lot easier to send out these SNSS archives right away each week hahah.  Hope you’re all enjoying Labor Day Weekend and if you’re a football fan, I already know you are.  College football came back in a big way (wow @ that Texas/Notre Dame game) and now the NFL regular season kicks off in just a few days.  Can’t beat it.

Here in Seattle, we always celebrate Labor Day Weekend with our massive music & arts festival, Bumbershoot.  Pretty good line up this year: Bryson Tiller, Tyler The Creator, Logic, YG, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Anderson .Paak, Flatbush Zombies, Run The Jewels, ZHU, Tame Impala, Ryan Caraveo, Flavr Blue, Shaprece, and more.  Special shouts to the homies Tunji and DJ Trackstar too.

We sprinkled a few Bumbershoot artists into the playlist on this week’s SNSS and you know we had to get something from the new Isaiah Rashad and Travis Scott albums on the show too (Zay’s project is especially craaaazy).  We also ran new tracks from James Blake & Vince Staples, Frank Ocean, Sampha, Rapper Big Pooh, De La Soul, Amine, Swet Shop Boys (yes, that’s Nas from The Night Of on the mic), and even a Waka Flocka appearance.  Didn’t see that coming, did ya?  That Big Gigantic album has some cuts though.  Our throwback celebrates a wildly underrated album, group, and lead MC, celebrating the 25th anniversary of their self-titled release.

What up everyone, hope you’re all well!  It feels like it’s been a hell of a week with all the Colin Kaepernick nonsense (no, not his very sensible, very American, very peaceful protest of police brutality and systematic oppression…I mean the reaction from many fans and way too many folks in sports media) and Trump’s latest efforts to singlehandedly destroy America (advantage Pena Nieto…and me), so hopefully a little music can take your mind off it.  I did have to weigh in on Kap, but if you follow me on social media, you knew that was coming.

Fresh off a year-long stint across the pond my bro DJ Hyphen comes through for one of my favorite episodes to date. The longtime homey Miguel Rockwell recently invited me on his super dope podcast series, The Biggest, and the episode is up now for y’all to check out.  I really enjoyed this convo with Mike and his cohost Joe “HawkinsBird” Hawkins, who Mike affectionately refers to as “the most redundant man I’ve ever known.”  They’ve been recording some great conversations with all sorts of folks in the Seattle hip-hop scene, so it was an honor to sit down with them and chop it up.
