Peter Rosenberg presents A Rosenberg Oddisee (mixtape)

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes on October 29th, 2008 by Hyphen

front

One of my fellow “real hip-hop heads” on the radio, Peter Rosenberg, linked with Oddisee to whip up this little EP featuring Torae, Skyzoo, Daytona, Saigon, Buckshot, and (the lovely) Nikki Jean.  The concept was simple: all Oddisee beats + dope MC’s + one day to record it all.  I’m sure it was hectic, but it turned out great.  Download link and tracklisting after the jump!

Mick Boogie x Dope Couture x A Tribe Called Quest

Posted in Art, Goods, Mixtapes, Politics on October 17th, 2008 by Hyphen

Can We Kick It

We’ve seen a bunch of dope Obama shirts over the last year, and here’s another one to add to the list thanks to Mick Boogie and Dope Couture.  Nothing is assured yet, but I’m so excited about the state of the presidential race right now.  I can’t even imagine the fall out if Obama loses.  Not only would people be upset all over the world, but this would throw a huge wedge in race relations and turn off an entire generation to politics.  If he’s up in the polls by a few points and loses, right or wrong, many will see it as an example of racism where people claim to be prObama, only to go behind the curtain and vote McCain.  Things would be really ugly for a long time, since he is clearly the much better candidate.  McCain’s throwing the kitchen sink at him and it’s not going to work.  There’s a reason why voters under 35 are overwhelmingly supporting Obama.  He’s the future.  McCain is the past.

Cop Mick’s shirt right here and check out the quick mixtape he put together with Terry Urban to launch the shirt:

  1. Mick Boogie/Terry Urban: Intro
  2. Daytona: Can I Kick It? (produced by Garbs Infinite)
  3. Mekka Don: Dear Obama (produced by Skinny Vee)
  4. Malik Yusef f/ Kanye West: Promised Land
  5. Ra The Mc: Ready Or Not (produced by Judah)
  6. Jus Mic: Politics As Usual
  7. Jin: Open Letter To Obama
  8. 6th Sense: Ignite The People (produced by 6th Sense)
  9. Doxx: Smile Sarah (produced by Remot)

Download here.  (ZShare has been acting up in the last few days, so we’ll see if this link stays ‘under maintenance’ for long)

Shrug.  I’ll just bump this tape instead.

One of the dopest DJ’s on the planet, Z-Trip, linked up with Shepard Fairey (you know, the guy who made this) to put together a bunch of fundraisers for the next President of the United States.  He just put his mix from these parties online, so we can all download and enjoy some great music mashed up with Barack’s incredible words.  There’s even a clean edit available on his site for all you fellow radio people.  We may have to play this on Sound Session on Nov. 2nd…gOBAMA.

Naledge presents – Welcome To Brainiac Society (mixtape)

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes on September 23rd, 2008 by Hyphen

cover

Whoo, this is super fresh.  Plus, since I’m working 3 jobs at the moment (“3 jobs mon!” – In Living Color skit), I definitely appreciate when people send me dope stuff along with a great description.  Naledge, take it away:

“Welcome To Brainiac Society is a compilation or collection of music that I like, and that I might have made or contributed to.  There’s no real rhyme or reason to it.  I think a lot of people got confused when I started repping Brainiac Society as my crew or my label cause I think a lot of people took it as a separation from Kidz In The Hall, which is not what it is.  It’s just me giving a platform to people that I like, and I want it to be looked at moreso as a Native Tongues type of thing than as a Bad Boy type of thing.  It’s just a group of people that make dope music and appreciate the artistry of Hip Hop and doesn’t have to necessarily mean they are rappers.  They can sing, they can make beats, DJ, whatever.  It’s about the creative renaissance that’s going on within Hip Hop all over the nation. These are people that I met in my travels who I feel are dope and they inspire me.  We just get together and we collectively make art…It’s also a platform for me to put out Fooch who is my artist.  It’s no departure from Kidz In The Hall.  Me and Double O are such creative beings in general, that we don’t know how to operate without 30 things going on at once.  We’re very much multi-taskers and we’ve always been that way.  We try to have our hands in everything.

RTC mixed it, it’s got new freestyles, some exclusive stuff, some stuff that’s been leaked on the internet, stuff that you might have forgot existed or never had or never downloaded on a a CD.  My hope with this is that people will download it, burn it to a CD, and just play it, or add it as a playlist to their ipod.  That’s really what it is, just a dope mix, a dope collection of music.  Talented individuals on all fronts, and I’m really excited about it.”

Featuring artists like Pacific Division, Fooch, Tanya Morgan, The Cool Kids, Skyzoo, 6th Sense, Wale, Naledge himself, and more, you know this is dope.  Back cover and download link after the jump.  Huge shout to Alex over at Ruby Hornet for putting this together!

Cee & Bekah – The Soul Movement, Vol. 2

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes on September 17th, 2008 by Hyphen

Cee & Bekah

I posted up Notion’s tape yesterday, and as promised, here’s the rest of the new material from my new Australian homies, Cee & Bekah.  Again, if you’re unfamiliar, check their interviews with Kevin Nottingham and Travis @ Wake Your Daughter Up to get the scoop. Basically, Cee is the MC of the group and Bekah provides the soul with her singing.  The result is some dope, head nodding, boom bap with some real emotion and feeling put into the music.  Just like with Notion, this stuff is ill, but also be on the lookout for their upcoming material with some of the dopest people in our American underground scene.  Big things to come.
