Jeezy

Now this is more like it.  An actual deserving recipient of WLotD.  Good to have you back Jeezy.

“You see me standing here, like a chandelier”
–Young Jeezy, “Vacation”

Hmm, slight problem.  Chandeliers hang, not stand.

huh?

(i had the same look as Exile when I heard this)

Blu is the man and probably in my top 3 favorite MC’s right now.  Plus he’s a cool ass dude, so this pains me to do.  However, I heard a line in Evidence’s new track that just confused me:

“It’s the middle of ’08, and I still ain’t heard Obama speak bout problems that we face”
–Blu, “For Whom The Bell Tolls”

Word? This reminds me of the criticism that many people tried to hit Barack with early in his campaign: that he was only preaching this esoteric “change” idea, without backing it up with substantive policy positions and strategies.  The problem with that is that if you actually make an effort to listen to more than a 30 second soundbite on the news, or go read any of the extensive issue pages of his website, you quickly learn what Obama’s all about.  Now, you don’t have to agree with his ideas, but to say that they aren’t there or he hasn’t addressed virtually everything is just false.  I hope Blu has found Barack’s statements that talk about the issues he’s concerned with, because I assure you, they’re there.

So forgive me homey, but I just disagree with that line.  Blu’s still possibly the illest MC in the game right now, so make sure y’all cop his new Johnson&Jonson project.  Easily one of the best albums of the year.  And here’s Ev’s new track if you haven’t grabbed it yet:

Evidence ft. Phonte, Blu, & Will.I.Am – “For Whom The Bell Tolls”

“I’m so flossy, I come with a dental package”
–Chingy, “Roll On ‘Em”

Congrats?

Redman

It’s never fun to put a legend in WLotD, but this line just confused me:

“It’s Redman, hurry, my flow, hot curry/
Only dude with Pro Tools and a Blackberry”
–Redman, “This Is It (Showoff Remix)”

I know like 10 people with Pro Tools and Blackberries, so I know Redman knows a million…wtf.  Am I missing some alternate meaning?  Eh well, always good to hear the Funk Doc rhyme.

Royce

Royce is the man and he ripped the rest of this verse, but ummm:

“Get into his ass cause I ain’t opposed/
I’m a living anal probe”
–Royce The 5’9″, “Slaughterhouse”

Yeeeeeeaaaah…no.

This week’s Sound Session should be online for y’all by the end of the night…hold tight.

Dangerfield

Hmm, my first ever unaccredited WLotD.  I don’t know who DJ Premier used for the cuts on the new Black Milk song, “The Matrix,” but one of the lines is absolutely horrible:

“You’re in my danger field like Rodney”
–????, scratches from Black Milk’s “The Matrix”

Anyone know who’s responsible for this wackness?  He must be brought to justice.

Cube

“These 32 teeth, will give yo’ ass grief/
Bite you like a Fatburger, if you got beef”
–Ice Cube, “It Takes A Nation”

Cube’s delivery is pretty mediocre on his new album, but at least most of the content is on point.  I’m willing to look the other way for most of the rhymes that challenge the status quo, but there are certain couplets, like above, that I can’t cosign.

Wayne in his natural state

WLotD is back after a little vacation, and who better to re-launch it with than the G.W.R.O.A.T., Lil’ Wayne himself?

“I never loved a b*tch, I only loved the moments/
Sh*t, I’m all about the Bills like Thurman Thomas”
–Lil’ Wayne, “I Can’t Feel My Face”

In terms of the meaning and simile, that’s fine.  However…”moments” and “Thomas”?  You’d have to be like Wayne in that picture to think those two remotely rhyme.

Kanyeezy

As I mentioned during Wayne’s month of shame, ‘Ye has a horrible line in this joint:

“How it feel to wake up and be the sh*t and the urine?”
–Kanye West, “Swagga Like Us”

Not good ‘Ye, not good at all.  He’s one of my favorite rappers but WLotD has to be [Fixed News] fair and balanced. [/Faux News]

G-Dep

Now that WLotD is back open to everyone, G-Dep bumrushed the door for the first two entries of October:

“You try to front, won’t be too intelligent/
That’s why your reign’ll be Brief like the Pelican/
My taste’s eloquent, I got the trunk in the front like an elephant”

&

“The boy make illa-noise, like Chicago”
–G-Dep, “Good Sh*t Freestyle (How Ever U Want It)”

Some people have been wondering what Dep’s been up to lately.  Perhaps you shouldn’t.
