The Audacity of Dope

Back once again with another episode of SNSS for you.  Here’s show #534, featuring a plethora of cuts, ranging from the first effort off the collaborative EP between Big Boi and Phantogram (aka Big Grams…I see what you did there guys), to some unsigned hypeness from a very fresh Colorado/LA singer named CRL CRRLL (shout to the homey Low Key).  In between, we ran cuts from the good Doctor, Magnif (produced by Dilla), Rick Ross, Blu, Dave B, Mick Jenkins, Rocky Rivera, Leon Bridges, Prince, Rationale, Abhi//Dijon, SG Lewis, Azekel, 8 Ball, Scotty ATL, Big K.R.I.T., and a really dope record from up and coming Texas group, BROCKHAMPTON.  Yes, all caps, so you know it’s that serious.

We also celebrated 3 special throwbacks: the 10 year anniversary of Little Brother’s borderline classic (combo of the music and what it meant for an underground group trying to break through on a major at the time), The Minstrel Show, plus the 19th anniversary of 2Pac’s passing and the 21st anniversary of Biggie’s classic debut.  Is it just me or is it completely insane that Pac died the same day of the year Ready To Die came out?  “It’s bigger than hip-hop…”

Big news for our station this week as we announced that our old friend, Eddie Francis, will be returning to host KUBE 93’s night show starting September 2nd!  To celebrate and help spread the news, Eddie came by SNSS this week and hung out with J. While by definition, I always enjoy the music we play on SNSS, this week’s episode featured a ton of really great records, including two that are currently fighting out an epic “favorite song of the moment” battle in my head:  The Internet’s “Dontcha” (Pharrell is somewhere seething that he didn’t make this) vs. Drake ft. Kendrick’s album was initially hailed as a potential classic and it continues to get better with age. I speculated that he had it in him back in this post for the “Tammy’s Song” video, and I think he’s pulled it off.  good kid, m.a.a.d. city.  5 mics for me.

On this week’s SNSS, our friend, the illustrious Saul Williams, joined us to co-host and discuss his new book, Chorus: A Literary Mixtape, which you can cop here.  It’s an amazing piece of work where Saul combined hundreds of poetry submissions from his social media channels and then “mixed” them together through the underlying themes in the text.  He even highlighted specific words from the other authors throughout the book to create his own poems, woven inside the other pieces.  Everything that good DJ’s do with music, he did with poetry.  Trill.

The Van City homey JayKin dropped a quick video from his upcoming Sneakers & Video Games 2 project and you really can’t go wrong with a piece featuring Juice and Street Fighter.  Speaking of which, I recently found out that Ryu’s name is pronounced “Rhyooo” rather than “Ry-uuu.”  Needless to say, I feel like I’ve been living a lie my entire life.  I’ll still destroy you with my girl Chun Li though.
