SNSS

Another week of Sound Session, another episode packed full of good music and good conversation with some of our favorite folks in the Northwest.  This week, Miguel Rockwell (host of The Biggest podcast and member of Clockwork, the fellas responsible for the first local music we played on SNSS) and Sol joined Nphared and I to catch up, talk shop, and share some more memories of J. Moore.  We also ran new cuts from Raekwon, Joey Badass + Schoolboy Q, Logic, Anna Wise, Jidenna, Sylvan LaCue, Brother Ali, GoldLink, Kendrick, and more.  Throwback in honor of the first album I ever bought, an absolute classic.

The Biggest podcast with DJ Hyphen

Posted in Interviews, Other Peoples' Interviews, Radio, Random Ish, Sound Session on September 1st, 2016 by Hyphen

Fresh off a year-long stint across the pond my bro DJ Hyphen comes through for one of my favorite episodes to date. We spend minimal time on his back story and then delve into everything that comes to our minds from Game Of Thrones to Kanye. A true convo amongst music nerds. This is what The Biggest is all about. #ItsTheBiggest

The longtime homey Miguel Rockwell recently invited me on his super dope podcast series, The Biggest, and the episode is up now for y’all to check out.  I really enjoyed this convo with Mike and his cohost Joe “HawkinsBird” Hawkins, who Mike affectionately refers to as “the most redundant man I’ve ever known.”  They’ve been recording some great conversations with all sorts of folks in the Seattle hip-hop scene, so it was an honor to sit down with them and chop it up.

There’s all sorts of random Hyphen-related trivia sprinkled in here as we completely nerd out about random topics.  This is probably the most you’ll ever hear me talk, so you’ve been warned!  Enjoy!

AZ – We Movin’ (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on June 2nd, 2013 by Hyphen

Two quick thoughts about this record:

1) AZ’s one of those MC’s that proves a dope flow should never leave you.  It’s like a good jumper or riding your bike.  Once you got it, you should be able to keep it forever.

2) Statik Selektah continues to murder beat after beat and while he’s getting a decent amount of props, I feel he’s heavily underrated in terms of his quality, quantity, and consistency.

Good friend of Sound Session, Lace Cadence, returns with his 2nd video from the mixtape J. Moore & I hosted a few months back, Launchpad (download here).  Strictly for the grown and sexy.  Shouts to Atuanya for his directorial debut!

Lace Cadence – Launchpad (mixtape)

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes on August 18th, 2010 by Hyphen

It’s been a long time coming, but the homey Lace Cadence of Clockwork has officially released his first solo project, coming in the form of the Launchpad mixtape.  If you’re familiar with Clockwork, then you know a bit of what to expect, but this builds off the group’s sound and takes it to a new place altogether.  I had a nice discussion with Lace about where he’s at musically these days and I couldn’t be prouder of dude.  In essence, he’s a grown ass man and he’s going to make the music he wants to make, without compromise.  He’s shown elements of this style throughout his career, but he really owned it on these records.  As an artist, that’s where you want to be.

I’m also happy to add that J. Moore and I hosted the tape, while DJ B-Mello mixed the project from front to back (sound familiar?).  It was a great process all around, so big shouts to Lace, Frank, Blastoff Productions, Producer L, and everyone involved with Launchpad.  Hope y’all enjoy the tape as much as we enjoyed putting it together.

Sound Session #230 (10-25-09)

Posted in Artists, Episodes, Interviews, Sound Session on October 27th, 2009 by Hyphen

Time is absolutely flying.  It’s about to be Halloween?  WTFFFFFFFFFFF, fail.

Another fun show this week, complete with a great soundtrack from artists like J. Cole, the CunninLynguists, Kidz In The Hall, Skyzoo, Vstylez, Paten Locke, Fashawn, Joss Stone, Wyclef Jean, Extended Famm, and more.  Shout to the homies Clockwork for coming through the studio and also Emilio Rojas for calling in from NYC, fresh off his victory celebration for the Yankees.

Is it wrong that I don’t even mind that the Evil Empire made it to the World Series this year?  It feels like it’s been so long, I’m almost…*gasp*…rooting for them.  Ok, perhaps I can’t go that far, but I’m fairly apathetic towards this year’s series.  One team that just won and the other team where everyone pretty much has a ring (though I’d like to see CC get one, so he can CC all the girls he see sees around town)?  Eh.

I’ll just root for good baseball and hope it goes 7.  I bet Cleveland is maaaaad salty looking at those Game 1 starters though…

Show #230 (10-25-09)

  1. Royce Da 5’9” ft. Phonte – “Something 2 Ride 2”
  2. J. Cole – “Welcome”
  3. Crooked I ft. Snoop Dogg – “Guess Who’s Back”
  4. **INTERVIEW WITH CLOCKWORK**
  5. Clockwork – “Accountability” (Local Music)
  6. Big Boi ft. Gucci Mane – “Shine Blockas”
  7. Camp Lo – “Satin Amnesia”
  8. CunninLynguists ft. E-40 & Evidence – “Running Wild”
  9. BK-One ft. Black Thought – “Philly Boy”
  10. Clipse ft. Cam’ron & Pharrell – “Popular Demand (Popeyes)”
  11. Kidz In The Hall – “Jukebox”
  12. Skyzoo – “Popularity”
  13. **INTERVIEW WITH EMILIO ROJAS**
  14. Emilio Rojas – “Bold and Arrogant”

Clockwork – Hold On (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on July 2nd, 2009 by Hyphen

Now that it’s my day job to watch music videos all day, I see damn near every clip that gets released.  As such, when a dope one comes around, I’m always extra impressed because I know how much effort gets put into the good ones…and I know how easy it is for folks to cut corners and release wack visuals, even for dope tracks.

We’ve been pretty blessed in the Seattle hip-hop scene to have produced some great videos recently (The Saturday Knights, They Live, The Physics, Choklate, and Zia Mohajerjasbi’s work with the Blue Scholars and Common Market, among others), and now we’ve got another from Clockwork.  The three man crew comprised of Lace Cadence, Take One, and Miguel Rockwell just released “Hold On” from their last album, Future Pastime, and it’s easily one of the cleanest videos I’ve seen in a minute.  There are some great effects to match up with the crystal clear images, plus the track is dope.

Cop Future Pastime on iTunes right here and follow the crew on Twitter as well.

Sound Session #184 (12-7-08)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on December 9th, 2008 by Hyphen

SNSS

Yes y’all, another dope edition of Sunday Night Sound Session for you to enjoy if you weren’t able to catch it live.  Or if you did, and you just want to relive the glorious night, you’re in luck.  Ok ok, perhaps it wasn’t a life changing event, but you know we had to hold you down as always with the best new music of the week.  We played great songs from artists like Black Milk, Evidence, Common, Jay-Z, Kanye West, and more, plus debuted new tracks from Nipsey Hussle, Blaq Poet, and the longtime homies, U-N-I.  Thurz & Y-O were even in town yesterday for a concert, so while they had to rock the stage while SNSS was on air, we did get a chance to record a nice interview that I’ll post up ASAP.

In the meantime, peep this episode for all that music, including a snippet of an interview we did a while back with West Coast legend Murs.  Again, I’ll post the entire interview (and video) soon.  We were also joined in studio by the local group Clockwork and some of Portland’s finest, Braille, Othello, and Ohmega Watts, collectively known as Lightheaded.  Braille even stuck around and dropped a dope (legit) freestyle off the dome to help us close the show.  You can watch it below.  Enjoy!

Show #184 (12-7-08)
