Sound Session #506 (2/22/15)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on February 23rd, 2015 by Hyphen

SNSS

Fresh out the oven, here’s the latest episode of SNSS for y’all.  J. Moore held it down and ran through new tracks from artists like Fashawn + Nas + Aloe Blacc (on one cut! with DJ Khalil on the beat!!!), Your Old Droog, Big Sean, Kanye West, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Dej Loaf, Frank Ocean, Kali Uchis, India Shawn, Henry Wu, Tunji Ige, Asher Roth, our good friend Sol, and more.  Be sure to download Sol’s two new songs off his Soundcloud, right here.  For our throwback, we honored the Good Doctor’s 50th and we ended the night with something new off D’Angelo’s Black Messiah.

Speaking of D’Angelo, I got a chance to see him perform on Friday here in London and it lived up to every hope I had.  Thinking about it, I’m giving him the crown of the best R&B artist of the last 25 years and I might just extend that back to MJ’s glory days.  After Mike’s reign, I don’t see who’s topping him.  Yes, he’s only released 3 albums (4 if you count his excellent live release recorded at another London show), but they’re all classics and aging much better than those of his contemporaries.  He’s heavily influenced by some of the greatest references a singer can have (James Brown and Fela Kuti come to mind), but somehow has always had his own distinct style that’s evolved subtly over the years.  He’s not just an amazing singer, but he’s also a writer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist.  Watching him completely OWN the crowd for 2 hours…with 2 separate encores…was a sight to behold.  He took us through damn near every emotion with his performance and having seen all his noteworthy competition live before, I can safely say, none of them can do what he does.

Anyway, I’m open to the debate (not really).  Who’s the greatest R&B singer of the last 25 years, if not D?

Show #506 (2-22-15)

1.    Fashawn ft. Nas & Aloe Blacc – “Something To Believe In”
2.    DJ Efn ft. Your Old Droog, Royce Da 5’9”, REKS, & O.C. – “Revolutionary Ride Music”
3.    Big Sean ft. Kanye West – “All Your Fault”
4.    Joey Badass ft. BJ The Chicago Kid – “Like Me”
5.    L. Hammond – “Any Hustle” (Local Music)
6.    Sol – “Pages” (Local Music)
7.    Raz Simone – “The Lights” (Local Music)
8.    Kendrick Lamar ft. Assassin – “The Blacker The Berry”
9.    Asher Roth – “Blow YR Head”
10.    Dr. Dre ft. Snoop Dogg – “Still D.R.E.” (Throwback of the Week)

Sound Session – Show #496 (12-14-14)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on December 17th, 2014 by Hyphen

SNSS

Sunday Night Sound Session has been on air for almost 10 years and we’ve archived every single episode online, but we’ve always looked for a good distribution solution. Soundcloud made some licensing changes lately that allows us to utilize their platform for streaming/downloading full episodes of the show. After doing some testing, I think this should work and help you guys enjoy the show much easier each week. No weird download sites, full functionality with all your devices (the Soundcloud app is a must for mobile/tablet), and one centralized location for our episodes and interviews going forward. Most importantly, it should allow more people to discover all the great music that’s out there right now so we can support these artists and they can continue to create!

On this week’s show, we played new tracks from artists like Joey Badass, Termanology, Michael Christmas, Astro, Tunji Ige, Saigon, J. Cole, Coultrain, Tuxedo, Anthony Hamilton, Your Old Droog, Electric Wire Hustle, Lion Babe, salute, Tink, and the loooooooong awaited return of D’Angelo. Bilal on Sound Session

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Sound Session on August 9th, 2009 by Hyphen

A few months ago, J. Moore and I held a quick informal poll on Sound Session with our listeners – Of the most well respected ‘big 3’ R&B singers of the last 15 years, who is your favorite – Maxwell, D’Angelo, or Bilal?  Despite only releasing one official album, Bilal battled it out with D’Angelo for the top spot and they ended up tying the vote.

Personally, after hearing 1st Born Second in 2001, my entire vision of R&B was shaken to the core.  On that one record, Bilal displayed a soulfulness in his music, songwriting, and most noticeably, his voice that hasn’t been topped since.  Simply put, it’s a flawless album and marks one of the crowning achievements of the Soulquarian collective.

When Bilal came through the SNSS studio, we jumped at the chance to ask him all about that album, his Love For Sale follow up that was unfortunately shelved by Interscope (Industry Rule #4,080), and his upcoming project, Air Tight’s Revenge.  We also discussed his upbringing, his first big break as D’Angelo’s back up singer (and his prompt firing), behind the scenes stories from the Soulquarian days, his favorite J Dilla memory, and much more.  Check out the full interview below to catch up with the legendary Bilal Oliver.

If you’re a music lover and don’t own 1st Born Second, cop it immediately

He’s alive!

Posted in Artists, Live Performances, Throwbacks on August 19th, 2008 by Hyphen

As much as we all complain about D’Angelo’s disappearance, at least he’s popped up on a few dope collaborations over the years (“So Far To Go” & “Imagine” come to mind).  Maxwell, on the other hand, has laid reeeeeally low.  I spotted this recent live performance of his classic “This Woman’s Work” over at the Smoking Section, and had to post it up.  If for some reason you don’t have the song, download it ASAP:

Maxwell – “This Woman’s Work”

Hint: play this song for any girl born in the 80’s who played basketball growing up and watch what happens.

Been wondering what happened to D’Angelo?

Posted in Artists, News, Other Peoples' Interviews on July 25th, 2008 by Hyphen

D'Angelo

Then click the picture above to read this excellent article from the August issue of Spin, written by David Peisner.  He discusses the possible explanations for D’s sabbatical (complete with great insight from some of the singer’s closest friends) and even extrapolates to cover the larger “left-of-center black music renaissance” the Soulquarians represented.  The piece also shines light on D’Angelo’s current work and leaves us hoping that we might actually hear something new sooner, rather than later.  In the meantime, break out Voodoo and give it a listen.  I read this article then played the album in the gym and it floored me.  Still one of my top 5 albums of all time.

Thanks to FWMJ for the heads up.

Throwback: Raphael Saadiq ft. D’Angelo – Be Here

Posted in Artists, Joints, Throwbacks on June 25th, 2008 by Hyphen

Saadiq

The official long distance relationship anthem.  Good looooooooord we need new D’Angelo in our lives.  Thankfully, it looks like that might just be happening…finally.  I’ll believe it when I hear it though.  In the meantime, we’ve got joints like this one from Raphael Saadiq’s criminally underrated Instant Vintage album to look back upon.

Raphael Saadiq ft. D’Angelo – “Be Here”

Check the video too.

“See, I got more than just some good d**k and some money…”  Classic.
