Sound Session #506 (2/22/15)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on February 23rd, 2015 by Hyphen

SNSS

Fresh out the oven, here’s the latest episode of SNSS for y’all.  J. Moore held it down and ran through new tracks from artists like Fashawn + Nas + Aloe Blacc (on one cut! with DJ Khalil on the beat!!!), Your Old Droog, Big Sean, Kanye West, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Dej Loaf, Frank Ocean, Kali Uchis, India Shawn, Henry Wu, Tunji Ige, Asher Roth, our good friend Sol, and more.  Be sure to download Sol’s two new songs off his Soundcloud, right here.  For our throwback, we honored the Good Doctor’s 50th and we ended the night with something new off D’Angelo’s Black Messiah.

Speaking of D’Angelo, I got a chance to see him perform on Friday here in London and it lived up to every hope I had.  Thinking about it, I’m giving him the crown of the best R&B artist of the last 25 years and I might just extend that back to MJ’s glory days.  After Mike’s reign, I don’t see who’s topping him.  Yes, he’s only released 3 albums (4 if you count his excellent live release recorded at another London show), but they’re all classics and aging much better than those of his contemporaries.  He’s heavily influenced by some of the greatest references a singer can have (James Brown and Fela Kuti come to mind), but somehow has always had his own distinct style that’s evolved subtly over the years.  He’s not just an amazing singer, but he’s also a writer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist.  Watching him completely OWN the crowd for 2 hours…with 2 separate encores…was a sight to behold.  He took us through damn near every emotion with his performance and having seen all his noteworthy competition live before, I can safely say, none of them can do what he does.

Anyway, I’m open to the debate (not really).  Who’s the greatest R&B singer of the last 25 years, if not D?

Show #506 (2-22-15)

1.    Fashawn ft. Nas & Aloe Blacc – “Something To Believe In”
2.    DJ Efn ft. Your Old Droog, Royce Da 5’9”, REKS, & O.C. – “Revolutionary Ride Music”
3.    Big Sean ft. Kanye West – “All Your Fault”
4.    Joey Badass ft. BJ The Chicago Kid – “Like Me”
5.    L. Hammond – “Any Hustle” (Local Music)
6.    Sol – “Pages” (Local Music)
7.    Raz Simone – “The Lights” (Local Music)
8.    Kendrick Lamar ft. Assassin – “The Blacker The Berry”

Sound Session #492 (11-16-14)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on November 18th, 2014 by Hyphen

SNSS

Aw snap, archiving this week’s SNSS episode only a day after we aired it?  Feels like the good old days…

Enjoy this week’s show featuring new music from Rozay x Hov x Timbo, Lupe Fiasco, Ty Dolla Sign, Big K.R.I.T., Kev Brown, Elzhi, Anderson Paak (super slept on album, peep that!), Ghostface Killah, Junia-T, Raleigh Ritchie, Stromae, Pusha T, Kyle, and more.  We also ran two throwbacks to celebrate some classic albums turning 15 and 20 years old over the weekend and even world premiered a brand new track from our buddies Shad & DJ T.Lo.  As I mentioned on air, I cosign literally 100% of Shad’s bars/content…which doesn’t even seem possible, but it is.  I guess we just look at the world in a very similar way and as a result, the music resonates deeply with me.  Plus, at the end of the day, it’s just dope as hell.  If you missed our recent interview with him, click here.

Do any of y’all have an artist that always says stuff you agree with and you’d feel comfortable sharing the music with anyone in your life, from kids to adults?  I mean, besides 2 Chainz.

Anyway, last note: I was cleaning up the archives and found our Big Sean “Studio 93” interview from last year that we never posted up.  If you want to watch/listen, it’s still a great convo with one of the coolest/nicest dudes in the biz, who also happens to be one of the biggest rappers around now.  Sean provided some really good insight into his creative process, his life outside of music, his goals, and more.  You can check that out right here.

Enjoy!

Posted in Episodes, Interviews, Sound Session on December 16th, 2013 by Hyphen

SNSS

For this week’s episode of SNSS, we decided to switch it up a little bit and highlight one of our favorite groups, The Physics, by dedicating half the show to their excellent catalog in celebration of their new album release.  Personally, they are far and away my favorite local crew from the Northwest, which is saying quite a bit when you think about all the quality music our region produces these days.

The Physics sat in on the entire show and talked all about the group’s history as we ran through tracks from all their projects.  We finished with a few records off their new album, Digital Wildlife, which is available for free download right here.  I can’t recommend it enough so definitely download it now and Seattle folks: come out to their album release party this Saturday at the Croc.  See you there!

Kendrick Lamar on Sound Session

Posted in Interviews, Sound Session on July 28th, 2012 by Hyphen

Apologies for the delay, but here’s our backstage interview with Kendrick Lamar from KUBE 93’s Summer Jam a few weeks ago. Kendrick spoke on balancing his journey to stardom with his focus on the music, his Top Dawg Entertainment family behind the scenes, tour life, “The Recipe” and finding the right single, and his upcoming album. When “Cut You Off” came up in discussion, I had to ask him about his motivations behind that one too since it’s one of my favorite records of the last 5 years or so. All around, a very cool dude and I know we’re all rooting for him to breakthrough and have mainstream success when the next album drops.
