Freddie Gibbs on KUBE 93’s Sound Session (video)

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Sound Session on May 30th, 2014 by Hyphen

One of the dopest MC’s in the game and one of the realest dudes in the industry, Freddie Gibbs has been one of our favorites for years on Sound Session.  We’ve ran into him numerous times but amazingly never had him in studio for a SNSS interview…until now.

Freddie came through the KUBE studios on 5/24/14 while in Seattle on tour with Tech N9ne and we chopped it up for a bit about his love for the city (its greenery and Seahawk Richard Sherman, in particular), growing up and starting his rap career in a tough environment in Indiana, and later making the move to Los Angeles to pursue music.  We also talked about his approach to the industry and how he can appeal to a wide fan base, before touching on his recent projects with Madlib and DJ Fresh.

Peep the full interview above for more and be sure to catch Freddie when he’s in your town.  Shout to Archie for coordinating and the First Ladies for shooting and editing the piece.

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib ft. BJ The Chicago Kid – Shame (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on August 11th, 2012 by Hyphen

With an extended intro, you get a bit of a 2 for 1 with this new video from Freddie Gibbs and Madlib for their collaboration with BJ The Chicago Kid called “Shame.” Gibbs is one of the illest out there and personally, I’d much rather hear records like this than the stuff he does with CTE and Young Jeezy. The good news is that he’s so prolific, it looks like he can actually do both at the same time and potentially appeal to the “underground” and “mainstream” crowds simultaneously (if those terms even exist anymore).  Either way, dude is a beast.

Freddie Gibbs ft. Dom Kennedy & Polyester – Menace II Society (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on December 18th, 2011 by Hyphen

Freddie’s ode to the West Coast…the best coast…off Cold Day In Hell gets some nice visuals featuring producer/crooner Polyester and Dom Kennedy, who really epitomizes the current iteration of the west coast G sound.  Definitely a smooth record that makes any of us stuck in the cold northwest region pine for that LA weather.

David Dallas ft. Freddie Gibbs – Caught In A Daze (video)

The homey David Dallas is gearing up for his Duck Down assisted assault on the North American market after conquering his homeland, New Zealand, and he’s just released the visuals for “Caught In A Daze” with Freddie Gibbs. Shot in Los Angeles and Papatoetoe (how many videos can say that?) by Askew1, the track can also be downloaded here:

The Kid Daytona ft. Freddie Gibbs and Alex (of the Kickdrums) – Take Aim (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on March 11th, 2011 by Hyphen

New visuals from Derek Pike off Daytona’s The Interlude tape, which is one of the few recent releases to achieve the vaunted “Hyphen’s iPod” status.  In other words, it’s dope as hell.  Download it here.

The Kid Daytona – The Interlude (mixtape)

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes on November 20th, 2010 by Hyphen

I’ve been waiting for Daytona’s The Interlude project to drop for a minute and it’s finally here.  It doesn’t disappoint one bit either…some of the best music out this side of Kanye right now.  Inspired by that golden era that I know we all miss.  Be sure to grab this ASAP!

Outasight – Never Say Never (mixtape)

Posted in Artists, Mixtapes on September 14th, 2010 by Hyphen

Never Say Never…and better late than never!  My apologies for the delay in posting this, especially since I was rocking to it for a minute before it dropped.  The homey Outasight is one of the illest up and coming artists in the game, and he continually drops free music for y’all to enjoy.  Buy his rookie card now while the price is cheap.

Freddie Gibbs – National Anthem (F*ck The World) (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on July 31st, 2010 by Hyphen

That different kind of For The Win.  FTW.

Gibbs is a perfect example of how you can be a lyricist and still make ‘hard’ records.  This chorus is something that Pac himself would be proud of.
