The Audacity of Dope

It’s been a tense week so we had to start the latest episode of Sound Session talking about it all.  I hope everyone is staying safe and sane, while spreading love via family, friends, and strangers as best you can.  Shout out to all those protesting the continued police brutality in America and everyone supporting Black Lives Matter.  Keep up the good work and keep faith that a change will come.  We will get there, despite the pain and hopelessness we may feel during the process.

When we last spoke, I was headed down the Bay for an experience of a lifetime: attending Game 7 of the NBA Finals, where Steph and the 73 win record breaking Warriors would face off with LeBron and all his immeasurable greatness.  While I was pulling for the west coast and for the smaller guy (hey, point guards always stick together), and really wanted to feel the excitement of a celebration in person, it was not to be.  Congrats to LeBron, the Cavs, and all the tortured Cleveland sports fans.  It was a game for the ages and I’m still buzzing from being in the building.  Thanks to the homies that made it happen!

There won’t be an episode of Sound Session tonight, as I’m in the Bay Area for Game 7 of the NBA Finals, so I wanted to make sure we got last week’s archive up for y’all.  I’ve never been to a Finals game and it feels like there’s never been a more anticipated game, so I’m about as excited as it gets.  Either Steph and the Warriors cap off the greatest season in NBA history, or LeBron adds to his greatness, the Cavs become the first team to ever come back from 3-1 down in a Finals, and the city of Cleveland breaks its long streak of suffering.  Y’all know me though…west coast all day…so let’s go Warriors!

Well, well, well.  Last we talked, the Warriors were facing elimination and the Zombie Sonics were on the verge of making the NBA Finals, a prospect nobody in Seattle is particularly comfortable with.  As I write this, I suppose all that still holds, as we’re on the verge of Game 7 and it’s win or go home time for both teams.  Suddenly however, the Warriors’ chances look substantially better, thanks to Klay and Steph (and timely defensive plays from Iggy) carrying them to a remarkable Game 6 road win.  Tip off is 3 hours away and I thoroughly expect this to be a classic game.  Hopefully we get to witness greatness…

Well guys, I hate to admit it, but I’m the Golden State Warriors jinx.  A team that played the best basketball we’ve seen in 20 years, and parlayed that to the greatest regular season record of all time, is on the brink of elimination after getting steamrolled by the Thunder again tonight.  While I was in London, the brilliance of this team, and Stephen Curry in particular, helped keep me connected to the US via texts and social media chat with all my basketball loving friends.  The Warriors went 68-7 while I was out of the country, which translates to an insane 91% winning percentage.  Since I’ve returned, they’re a far more human 14-7 (66%).  So unless Steph goes Super Saiyan in 3 consecutive games against a red hot Thunder team…my bad y’all.

For all my Seattle friends nervously waiting to see if OKC is going to get the title that should have been ours, hopefully some good music can take your mind off this nightmare scenario.  New tracks on this week’s episode of SNSS from The Game, Boogie, Problem, T.I., Chance, River Tiber, Sampha, Yuna, Jhene, OnCue, and more.  No throwback, as we had some technical difficulties that took about 15 minutes off the show, so a few records had to be cut.  Still an hour and a half of that real to get you further through the week.  Enjoy!

That phrase popped into my head twice recently: first on Sunday when Rougned Odor gave us the 2016 version of Chris Child to Kobe, clocking Jose Bautista (if you haven’t seen, behold) and secondly, tonight, when the Thunder stepped to the Warriors and handed them only their 2nd home loss all season.  In the long run, both Joey Bats and the Warriors will be ok, but they certainly lost any lingering air of invincibility, and it’ll be interesting to see if the Dubs can recover.  One thing is for sure, the entire city of Seattle is hoping they do…

What up y’all, hope you’re having a good week.  Perhaps not Steph Curry good, but hopefully still good nonetheless.  Props to the Blazers but watching Steph rip out their hearts (politely) the last two games has been incredible to watch.  If OKC manages to oust the Spurs, can you imagine how hard Russ is going to play to try to show the world he’s on Steph’s level?  And all the while, he has to show some mental restraint and get KD involved.  This should be a fascinating series to watch, but I’m also not killing off the White Walkers Spurs yet.

Alright, we’re all caught up with SNSS archives now with episode #550 (!!!), so it feels like we’re truly back.  You know we like to keep our music super, super current and this episode was heavy on Drizzy with his Views release last week, so we had to get this posted sooner, rather than later.

So…Views.  What do you guys think?  Drake rarely takes a step wrong in my book and to me, it’s another quality project but clearly not his best.  He almost seems uninspired on it, which is odd with the way he’s been hyping up this project for years now.  Plus, this one had the entire Apple/Beats marketing machine behind it, so while the rollout was massive, it seems like it could have been even bigger if this was the classic we hoped for.  That said, there are some really good moments, and we highlighted a few on this week’s show.  He also gave me a reason to drop the DMX throwback I’ve been saving for a while, so that alone gets respect from me.

While it’s been a minute since our last update, it’s been a pretty busy holiday season for the Sound Session crew.  We’ll save you all the individual details and give you a few key updates:

#1) The playlist for our last episode, Show #545 from January 17th, is below, but due to technical changes in the studio, we weren’t able to record it for the archive.  Apologies for that, as we featured some dope tracks you definitely need to peep from artists like Kanye, D.I.T.C., Anderson Paak, Curren$y, Majid Jordan, dvsn, PREP, Torae, Ryan Caraveo, Golden Rules, and more.

#2) As you may have heard, iHeartMedia has adjusted our station cluster in Seattle and KUBE has moved from 93.3 FM up the dial to 104.9 FM.  The end of the “KUBE 93” era means more to me than I would be able to put into words, but thankfully for us and Seattle, the brand lives on and the station is continuing to operate on 104.9 FM.  It’s an opportunity to start something new and write the next chapter for a legendary Seattle radio institution.  Change is never easy though, and we’d like to thank two people who helped Jon and I every step of the way with Sound Session over the last decade, but are now no longer with the company: Eric Powers and Karen Wild.  Thanks to both of you for everything and we’re excited to see your next moves.  You’ll always be a part of SNSS!

As for the show, we are off air this week in light of the changes but hope to be back on very soon.  We’ll keep everyone updated on the status and when you can hear us next.
