Sound Session #557 (6/26/16)

SNSS

When we last spoke, I was headed down the Bay for an experience of a lifetime: attending Game 7 of the NBA Finals, where Steph and the 73 win record breaking Warriors would face off with LeBron and all his immeasurable greatness.  While I was pulling for the west coast and for the smaller guy (hey, point guards always stick together), and really wanted to feel the excitement of a celebration in person, it was not to be.  Congrats to LeBron, the Cavs, and all the tortured Cleveland sports fans.  It was a game for the ages and I’m still buzzing from being in the building.  Thanks to the homies that made it happen!

Now that I’m back in Seattle, it’s business as usual with Sound Session.  On this week’s episode, we ran tracks from Kanye, Sampha, K.A.A.N., A-F-R-O, Jay IDK, Clams Casino, Loyle Carner, Palmistry, Mila J, Miguel, Khalid (not the DJ), Disclosure, Kraak & Smaak, and more.  The first hour felt like one of the best #bars hours we’ve had in a long time, while the 2nd half should satisfy your #vibes quota.  Even threw in a little Brexit chat for my UK mates, who managed to leave Europe twice this week, in maddeningly spectacular fashion both times.  Yikes, good luck lads.

Sound Session #556 (6/12/16)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on June 18th, 2016 by Hyphen

SNSS

There won’t be an episode of Sound Session tonight, as I’m in the Bay Area for Game 7 of the NBA Finals, so I wanted to make sure we got last week’s archive up for y’all.  I’ve never been to a Finals game and it feels like there’s never been a more anticipated game, so I’m about as excited as it gets.  Either Steph and the Warriors cap off the greatest season in NBA history, or LeBron adds to his greatness, the Cavs become the first team to ever come back from 3-1 down in a Finals, and the city of Cleveland breaks its long streak of suffering.  Y’all know me though…west coast all day…so let’s go Warriors!

We’ll be back on air on the 26th.  In the meantime, enjoy the last episode with records from De La Soul, Vursatyl, Mark Battles, Mick Jenkins, Vic Mensa, Asher Roth, midnight, Vince Staples, Jonwayne, A. Chal, Maxwell, the first Jurassic 5 track in a decade, and more.  Throwback goes out to all the grads, congratulations!

Problem on Sound Session (video)

Posted in Artists, Interviews, Sound Session on September 25th, 2014 by Hyphen

Problem traveled up the west coast from L.A. to Seattle and dropped by the KUBE 93 studios to chop it up with us for Sound Session on 9/10/14.

We discussed his background, how he originally started by producing on a PlayStation, how he started rapping for chicks, and how he developed arguably the best ad-lib in rap (WHAT!?!).  After talking about his past, he spoke on his upcoming album, “Karma,” and Diamond Lane Music Group’s strategy to make it his biggest release yet.  And as you might expect with a passionate LA native, the conversation ended with Problem explaining why Kobe is the greatest Laker of all time and who’s better, Kobe or MJ.

Big shout to Problem and all of Diamond Lane Music Group, plus the First Ladies for shooting/editing!

Sound Session #267 (7-11-10)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on July 12th, 2010 by Hyphen

You remember when you were a kid and your parents (if they loved you…shots fired) would ask about your day at school?  Regardless of what happened, 90% of the time, you’d respond to “how was your day?” with “…good.”  I mean, you could have aced a test…gotten into a fight…got that date to Homecoming…etc., but it’s always first nature to just sum it up.  “Good.”

Well, sometimes these Sound Session archives feel the same way.  That’s not a bad thing.  On the contrary, we just continue to provide that piffery.  Uncut, raw, dopeness…straight to your veins each week (enough overt drug references for ya?).  “How was Sound Session this week?”…”Dope.”

And in case you’re wondering, our throwback is in response to the Oscar Grant madness…aka the only decision worse than Bron Bron this week.  Speaking of which, here’s some advice: announce the creation of a specific chapter of your charity that will focus on Cleveland’s youth.  Pledge a minimum of 2 million, which is a drop in the bucket for you.  Anytime someone attacks you for the callousness you showed the Cavs, say you’re sorry but that’s just sports anyway…your charity work shows how you really feel about the community.  Diffuses the situation and 2 million in donations buys you 10 million in PR.  But nah…run with the “all the ad revenue from my ego-tastic special goes to the B&G Club” angle.  [Jamie Foxx] Yeah, that’ll get ’em on your side…yeah [/I am your conscience].

Show #267 (7-11-10)

  1. Jazmine Sullivan – “Holding You Down (Goin’ In Circles)”
  2. Big Boi ft. Sam Chris – “The Train, Pt. 2 (Sir Lucious Left Foot Saves The Day)”
  3. Rick Ross ft. Jay-Z and John Legend – “Free Mason”
  4. The Kid Daytona – “On The Hill”
  5. Shawn Jackson ft. John West – “Lil Big Man”
  6. MED ft. Talib Kweli – “Classic”
  7. Raphael Saadiq – “It’s A Shame”
  8. The Physics – “My Place” (Local Music)
  9. Drake – “Paris Morton Music”
  10. Aloe Blacc ft. The Grand Scheme – “Billie Jean”
  11. Pharoahe Monch ft. Mela Machinko – “Shine”
  12. Homeboy Sandman – “Calm Tornado”
  13. Marco Polo ft. Promise – “The Bridge”
  14. Shad – “Keep Shining”

Clipse ft. Cam’ron & Pharrell – Popular Demand (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on November 17th, 2009 by Hyphen

The long awaited video for one of the best tracks of the year just hit the net and I think it’s safe to say that the Clipse are officially killing it right now.  Aside from “All Eyes On Me” with Keri Hilson, every joint that’s leaked from Till The Casket Drops has been flames.  If you missed Pusha and Malice talk about this record on Sound Session recently, peep the back story:

Check the full interview here.

Has anyone asked Pusha about that rather potent shot at Lebron and apparently sharing a groupie?  Normally, the tabloid stuff is just that, but it sounds like there’s some truth to this one and it’s a little personal.  Either way, hilarious.  Pusha’s flow is disgustingly ill on that first verse too.

Oh, and for the record – fast food: we off that.

Jay-Z – D.O.A. (Death of Autotune) (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on June 29th, 2009 by Hyphen

I was debating whether or not to post this video, since I know it’s been plastered on virtually every blog in existence today, and then a reader commented his appreciation for NOT posting this…BUT…I’m afraid I gotta.  I just like this song, though the video doesn’t do a whole lot for me.

I’m not sure what’s funnier:

  • The haircut ending
  • Jewelry and bottles that will probably appear in his next video being blown up
  • The ugly lefty jumper…[clipse] EEGGHHHCCKKK [/pusha]

But in the end, ‘Ye told me to kill y’all to keep it one hunnid.
