Nas – The Don (video)

Still waiting for someone to tell me a better record that dropped this year…
While Daytona recently released his second Interlude project, he also just dropped this video for “NYA” off the first edition. I prefer the first volume overall, but they’re both great. Cop them here and here if you’ve been sleeping.
Elzhi’s manager, Jae Barber, teams up with Gerard Victor to create some nice visuals for El’s remake of Nas’ classic (and my favorite song off Illmatic). You’ll recognize faces like Eminem, Royce Da 5’9″, J Dilla, Proof, T3, Baatin, and others in the footage of Detroit’s legendary Hip-Hop Shop, famously highlighted in 8 Mile.
I’m glad this song and video came out after the Fox News “controversy” regarding Com’s appearance at the White House, just cause I know it would be an easy target. Nas murdered this record, btw.
Elzhi’s back with the next set of visuals off Elmatic, this time linking up with Michael Castelaz to highlight “It Ain’t Hard To Tell.” Has anyone asked Nas if he’s heard the project yet? Most artists would probably be a little salty, but I gotta think Nas would be appreciative.
I saw a few people commenting on the wait we’ve endured for Elzhi’s Elmatic and it was evident that they were a little frustrated because it’s not necessarily a completely original concept. However, the few records that we’ve heard off it so far are RIDICULOUS so I’m really looking forward to it being released on May 10th. The combination of Elzhi’s Nasir-influenced bars with live instrumentation is gonna be crazy…
I said this would be an incredible album before it dropped…then watched as many people overlooked it on their year end wrap up lists…and now we continue to see dope visuals drop for the Distant Relatives project. I’m convinced that when people look back on it years later, they’ll finally give it the respect it deserves.
Incredible new visuals from Nabil Elderkin and the Distant Relatives. “Patience” is found on one of two albums Lupe mentioned as his favorites of 2010 in our interview, and I must agree. I remember hyping this album up and then being surprised when people didn’t generally rank it as high as I did. It’s going to go down as one of the more underrated projects of the last decade.
Sidenote: how salty does Kanye have to be after seeing this? Nabil is virtually his in-house director and he was sitting on this gem that would have been perfect for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy aesthetics…
Alright, not to get all Rev Run/emo-Drake on you, but with my recent home purchase and subsequent move, I’ve been thinking about how my post-college life has broken down nicely into a few sections based on housing. There was the first apartment phase where I was out of the dorms and really living on my own for the first time (crappy job but fun times). That was followed by the second, nicer apartment with a better job and more money in the pocket, but overall, not as fun as the no-responsibility days that preceded it. Now I’m on to the first home section and I’m determined to use the transition as a catalyst to spur the rest of my life on to a new phase as well.
Whether or not you followed the same type of route, your adult life is probably fairly similar. Anyone reading this is part of the same basic culture and thus we all share the same basic goals, while battling the same basic challenges. So personally, I’ve decided to take a step back and approach things a little bit more analytical than before. The new plan is to define, prioritize, execute, complete, repeat, and assess. That goes for everything in life. Y’all might be able to do it all a little more fluidly, but I’m left brain. Do whatever works best for you, but make sure you’re moving forward and progressing. aka:
Ayo, the brother’s “Stillmatic”
I crawled up out of that grave, wiping the dirt, cleaning my shirt
They thought I’ll make another “Illmatic”
But it’s always forward I’m moving
Never backwards stupid, here’s another classic
And since you’ll need a soundtrack, Hubble SNSS gotchu.

Pardon the brief delay on this week’s SNSS archive, but we had a few technical difficulties. Plus, it’s a short week for Thanksgiving, so everything seems even more hectic than usual. I’ll gladly take it if it means a 4 day weekend though…
Check out this week’s show for great music from artists like Lupe Fiasco, Slum Village, Obie Trice, Souls of Mischief, Strange Fruit Project, Macklemore, James Pants, BlakRoc, and more. Plus, we aired a snippet of our recent interview with Wale. We’ll be posting the full discussion (with video) on the blog soon (along with the full Royce Da 5’9″ video in the next few days). Keep it locked.
I know it’s generally a positive holiday, but whenever this day comes around, I can’t help but think of Nas’ bars from “What Goes Around“:
“The Indians saved the Pilgrim/
And in return, the Pilgrim killed ’em/
They call it Thanksgiving, I call ya holiday hellday/
Cause I’m from poverty, neglected by the wealthy”
Not trying to be a Debbie Downer, but remember how we got here…and on that note – *ahem* – Happy Thanksgiving!
