The Audacity of Dope

On this week’s SNSS, we gave world premieres to two dope records: Sam Lachow’s “Action Figures (Remix)” with Sol and Mario Sweet, plus a cut off the upcoming NehruvianDOOM project from Bishop Nehru and MF Doom.  Be sure to peep those, along with the block of music from Flying Lotus to Prince, which might have been my favorite string of records we’ve played in quite some time.  None of them are rap records, but that alt/indie/pseudo-R&B or dance is killing everything else right now, especially when it comes from the UK.  Don’t sleep.

Two SNSS updates back to back!  Here’s episode #477, where we played new records from Camp Lo, M.O.P., Cormega, AZ, Redman, Styles, G-Unit, Common, DTMD, Your Old Droog, Macklemore, FKA twigs, Sam Smith, Majid Jordan, and more.  In honor of Jay-Z and Beyonce performing in Seattle last week…and obviously not seeing him perform some of his older classics…we hopped in the way back machine for a throwback set of some Jay-Z classics.  The man has so much quality material, it’s really ridiculous when you start thinking about all the records…

We were also joined in studio by one of the most buzz-worthy artists in hip-hop right now, Seattle’s own Sam Lachow.  Every month, another major label calls me to ask about Sam, but so far, he’s been able to build everything up independently.  It’s a great route if you can do it and Sam’s excelling, with his new album, Huckleberry, reaching the iTunes top 5 hip-hop albums.  Go cop that.

Last, but not least, Seattle veteran Draze came through to play a record called “The Hood Ain’t The Same,” and speak on the important issue of gentrification.  One of the more enjoyable conversations we’ve had on the show recently.

As I was saying about Seattle hip-hop…it just doesn’t stop.

Be on the lookout for Raz’ Solomon Samuel Simone EP coming out March 19th.  This kid is killing it right now.  Peep his “Cold” video if you missed it right here.

It’s no secret that Seattle’s hip-hop scene is thriving these days and the rest of the country is rapidly taking notice of the talent we have in the town.  Macklemore is leading the way, but there’s a bevvy of artists making great music with breakout potential.  People already know about folks like Sol, The Physics, Grynch, J. Pinder, Nacho Picasso, etc., but from what I’ve heard of Raz Simone, I think it’s safe to put him on that list as well.

Here’s the video for “Cold,” a record Raz debuted on Sound Session last week from his upcoming Solomon EP.  Great stuff.

Visuals off of one of my favorite projects from the Northwest over the past few years, The Good Sin’s collaboration with 10.4 Rog, Late.  I’m was worried I might be spotted in one of those pictures, but then I realized a real life Hyphen has never been caught on film in the wild.  Real ninjas move in silence.
