Sound Session #592 (4/23/17) – Co-hosted by DJ Nphared, Marcus Lalario, & Maseo of De La Soul

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on April 29th, 2017 by Hyphen

(L-R: Upendo, Maseo, (Vitamin), Marcus, & DV)

Last Sunday, many of those closest to J. Moore gathered at Ciudad in Seattle, one of the venues owned by Jon’s longtime friend and business partner, Marcus Lalario.  It was held 2 days after Jon’s 48th birthday on April 21st, which I’m happy to say is now officially known as Jonathan Moore Day in the City of Seattle.  Dope to see one Mayor recognize another.

I also posted up a classic SNSS episode from his 44th birthday in 2013, complete with all sorts of gems from Jon on life & death, here.  Hope you enjoy the walk down memory lane…

The memorial at Ciudad was a great event (albeit a bit heavy on the Egyptian Musk) and we had a blast catching up and remembering J’s life.  Everyone grieves in different ways, but one thing’s for sure: J would want us to focus more on celebrating life than mourning it.  The building was filled with life, love, laughter, and music, all things that I’ll forever associate with Jon.  Thank you to everyone who came through and special thanks to Marcus for organizing the event.

Marcus, Upendo, DV-One, and Maseo from De La Soul all came through Sound Session to kick it with DJ Nphared and I after the festivities.  We played new tracks from artists like Big Boi, Killer Mike, Organized Noize, Joi, Snoh Aalegra, Vince Staples, Gorillaz, Pinder, Kendrick, Black Thought, Talib + Styles P, ANoyd, Little Dragon, Porter Ray, Dave B, and more.

It was especially fun to interview Maseo again, an absolute hip-hop legend.  We chatted about De La’s history, NYC rap over the years, the artificial nature of the commercial vs. underground divide (including his regret for being a part of the Roots’ “What They Do” video), and of course, his friendship with Jon that dated back to 1989!  Vinny & Johnny, the Merlot Brothers.  Shout to all the fellas for coming through and helping send off Jon right.

Sound Session #588 (3/26/17) – Co-hosted by DJ Nphared & Macklemore

SNSS

Special episode of Sunday Night Sound Session this week, as Nphared and I were joined in studio by local underground Seattle rapper turned international superstar, Macklemore.  Mack’s been a friend of SNSS since the very start and despite all his amazing worldwide success, he hasn’t changed as a person one bit.  It’s a testament to his character/personality, and the Seattle hip-hop scene in general, where I’ve always thought our most impressive characteristic has always been our authenticity.  We don’t have a specific “sound” in the Northwest, but instead, the common trait across most of our artists is that they’re pretty much all just genuine, down to earth people.  Mack epitomizes that.  He’s had years of personal growth and success, but at the core, he’s the same smart, talented, gracious, and hilarious kid he’s always been.

It was awesome to sit down with him and talk about all sorts of topics, from his new album (some exclusive info in there for y’all), touring, the odd nature of life as a celebrity, his friends in the industry, raising his daughter, and, of course, his memories of our beloved “Mayor,” J. Moore.  Jon put Mack on his first shows way back in the day and was a close friend throughout the years.  As with many of the successful folks in our scene, J started as a mentor to Mack and their relationship grew as Mack got older and became a peer.  I encourage you to read his tribute to Jon on Instagram if you haven’t already.  Of course we had to discuss the Egyptian musk story too…

Along with our chat, we ran new records from CyHi, J.I.D, Kendrick, GoldLink, Drake, Little Dragon, Amine, Tuxedo, Thundercat, Miguel + Premier, Jidenna, Loyle Carner, and more.  Special 20th anniversary throwback in honor of one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time.

Enjoy the show and as you’ll always hear us say going forward: rest in peace to J. Moore.

Sound Session #587 (3/19/17) – RIP J. Moore

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on March 23rd, 2017 by Hyphen

SNSS

If you’re reading this, either on our email blast or our blog, you’re probably aware that it has been a very difficult few weeks for us here in Seattle’s hip-hop community.  On March 8th, J. Moore passed away from the health issues he had been battling over the last year.  There are no words to express how devastating a loss this is for our city and our scene.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jon’s entire family, especially his sons Upendo and Miles.  If you’ve ever enjoyed an episode of Sound Session or if J impacted your life in any way, I ask you to please consider donating to his legacy fund, which will go towards education costs for his children.

One day, I hope to be in the right place to share how much Jon meant to me, but I’m unable to do so at the moment.  I’m an only child, but Jon’s been my brother since we started working on Sound Session together in 2005.  He meant the world to me and I’ll cherish all the time we got to spend together.  Love you forever J.

In the absence of my extended thoughts, I wrote some words for our KUBE tribute that you can read here.  I also recommend a few pieces in remembrance of Jon from Seattle Weekly (1 | 2), the Stranger, this excellent blog post, KEXP, and his Facebook wall, which is filled with countless amazing stories from some of the people he touched.

As for our show, I returned from my work trip to Brazil on Sunday and promptly hopped in the studio with DJ Nphared, DV-One, and Jake One to pick up where we left off.  We played some great new music (including Jake’s new single from Tuxedo) and shared some memories of J.  We even dusted off some of his old Source of Labor records.  It honestly felt like he was in the room with us, which I suspect will always be the case as long as SNSS is on the air.

My only regret is that the last half hour of the recording has some distortion (stuttering/clicking noises), so I apologize for that.  Hopefully you can still enjoy the music and stories.  We’ll adjust the studio equipment next week and aim for better quality.

Enjoy the show and tell all your family & friends that you love them.  We appreciate you and thank you greatly for your support.  Love & Light.

Sound Session #586 (2/12/17) + Month Break

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on February 15th, 2017 by Hyphen

SNSS

On this week’s episode of Sound Session, DJ Nphared and I ran through new joints from artists like CyHi The Prynce, Smoke DZA, Nick Grant, Vince Staples, Locksmith, SiR + Anderson .Paak + King Mez, Dave B, Big Sean & Jeremih, Smino, King Reign (RIP), Loyle Carner, Porter Ray, Rex Orange County, Matt Martians, Syd, NAO, Gabriel Garzon-Montano, Sonder, and more.  Unfortunately, the recording equipment glitched out down the stretch (lost a 3-1 lead) and we missed out on the last 35 minutes of the show.  Highly recommend tracking down those records when you have time though.  All heatrocks.

I assume you’ve already heard the last record from the show though, our throwback to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Erykah Badu’s classic debut album.  “Next Lifetime” felt fitting since a) it’s dope as hell, and b) we’re going on a brief 4 week hiatus and will see you again in mid-March.  I’m headed down to Brazil for my ESPN day job and while we were able to broadcast from Australia when I was out there recently, the structure isn’t in place to keep that going for this trip.

Never fear though, as long as the world is still around in a month, we’ll be back.  Feel free to stay in touch on my socials in the interim: Twitter / Facebook / Instagram.  See you soon!

Show #586 (2/12/17)

Sound Session #583 (1/22/17)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on January 24th, 2017 by Hyphen

SNSS

Well, that escalated quickly.

We’re less than a week into this new Trump-led America and executive orders attacking many things that the hip-hop & younger communities value are flying fast and free.  Making it harder for first time home owners to pay their mortgage?  Check.  Reducing health care support in developing nations?  Check.  Violating agreements with indigenous Americans to pursue an environmentally damaging oil pipeline?  Check.  Yahtzee.  Triple word score.

All this and the invention of “alternative facts,” or as they’re traditionally known, “lies,” within just a few days.

Tough times ahead.  Be sure to love each other and speak out for what you believe in.  Remember: we are the majority, by far.  Focus on the things that matter and set your sights on the 2018 midterms.  Like K Dot said, “we gon’ be alright.”

Here’s this week’s episode of Sound Session to provide you some musical relief from the madness.  New tracks from artists like Oddisee, Lupe Fiasco, Sol, J. Cole, Tall Black Guy + Ozay Moore (fka Othello), Little Simz + SiR, 070, WOLFE de MCHLS + Big K.R.I.T., Alina Baraz + Khalid, GoldLink, Buddy, Tuxedo, and more.  Throwback dedicated to what it feels like right now.  Overall, lots of good music, which I expect to be even more of a staple over the next 4 years.  We’ll be providing that each week, until Trump bans good taste.

Enjoy!

Show #583 (1/22/17)

Sound Session #582 (1/15/17)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on January 16th, 2017 by Hyphen

SNSS

Hard to believe, but it’s true: this is the last episode of Sound Session during Barack Obama’s presidency.  We started the show in May of 2005, so we’ve been on air to witness most of his meteoric rise and discussed it quite a bit over the last decade.  The Obama era certainly helped shape the sound of the show, as his influence permeated every facet of our society and impacted the hip-hop world perhaps more than any other part of pop culture.  We’ve never had a more hip-hop friendly president…nor one with better musical taste.  We’re sad to see him go, for too many reasons to list.

Here’s our latest playlist, featuring new music from artists like Tribe, Common, Run The Jewels, AJ Tracey, Wiley, The Lox, Oddisee, The-Dream, Syd, Marian Hill, Nick Grant, J. Cole, Khalid, Sinead Harnett, Chris McClenney, Kid Cudi, Sampha, Raleigh Ritchie, and more.  Classic 90’s R&B throwback goes out to my guy Barack.

Enjoy!

Sound Session #581 (1/8/17) – Best of 2016

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on January 10th, 2017 by Hyphen

SNSS

It’s been a few weeks since our last episode, and a few months since we’ve broadcast from the friendly confines of the KUBE studio, but we are back in full effect!  My ESPN assignment in Australia has ended and Sound Session is home again in Seattle.  Good news is that it’s still 30 degrees outside for me.  Bad news is that last week, it was Celsius and now it’s Fahrenheit.

Other that the cold and the whole “is he going to kill us all” cloud hanging in the air, it’s great to be back home.  Shout to everyone I met in Australia, which low key might be the best place on earth.  There are literally 3 things wrong with that country: it’s really far away, the wifi isn’t great, and they won’t let you hold a koala without “proper accreditation.”  I will definitely be back, as soon as I figure out what paperwork is needed…

We kicked off 2017 by looking back and broadcasting our Best of 2016 picks.  DJ Nphared sat in on co-hosting duties and we ran through all sorts of crazy records, running out of time far before we ran out of heatrocks.  The world may end in 2017, but at least we’ll have one hell of a soundtrack.  Music is in a great place.

Enjoy!

Sound Session #580 (12/11/16) + Holiday Break

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on December 18th, 2016 by Hyphen

SNSS

As would only be fitting with a year like 2016 (gotta be one of the worst for the world in recent memory), we’ve had a string of difficulties broadcasting the show down the stretch.  Even with all the tech advances at our fingertips, doing Sound Session from the road for the last few months has been tricky, so apologies for the hiccups.  This episode is the last one of the year, as we’ll be taking the holiday season off and relaunching in 2017 with our Best of 2016 wrap up show.

In the meantime, here’s episode #580 featuring new music from artists like Common, The Roots, J. Cole, Smino, Rapsody + Raphael Saadiq, Azad, The Weeknd, Run The Jewels, Raleigh Ritchie, BJ The Chicago Kid, Tom Bailey, R.LUM.R, John Legend + Miguel, and more.  We even ran a little UK block with Wiley, AJ Tracey + MJ Cole, and Donae’O + Jme + Dizzee Rascal, then dipped back 20 years for a classic Redman throwback.

Enjoy the music and the holiday season with you and yours.  See you again in the new year!
