The Audacity of Dope

The homies Eighty4 Fly and Jon Jon Augustavo have linked up for another great video from the town, this time for “Cool Kid” off Eighty4’s Colors project. Download the entire tape right here.

My favorite part of this whole Seattle movement is that everyone is legitimately down for each other. Every time someone in the scene drops a video, you see countless homies making cameos and showing support. We’re all going to look back on these days as special moments in Seattle’s music history. I hope this never stops.

SNSS listeners know that we welcomed Thaddeus David, Nacho Picasso, and Avatar Young Blaze in to our studio last week to debut their new “Sir Lancelot” record and now you can download the mp3 for yourself.  It’s somewhat of a different sound for Thad, but as you’d suspect with a MC of his caliber, he adapts his flow well for the track.  Nacho and Avatar sound at home too, with Nacho’s vocals cutting sharply through the beat and Av’s closing it out with his “scumbag of the year” verse. After last week’s debacle, you didn’t think I’d forget to record SNSS on back to back episodes, did you?  Back once again, it’s the incredible.  This time, we were joined in studio by one of our favorite local artists, Thaddeus David, who you should be familiar with from his work with State of the Artist (SOTA) and Helluvastate.  He’s now releasing his first solo project, Maven, this Friday and we spoke with him all about it.

On what appears to be the most packed couch in recent memory, Thaddeus spits a quickie from his upcoming album, Maven.  Thad will be coming through SNSS this coming weekend to talk all about the project.  Coming off one of the best releases of last year with Taysean for Helluvastate, everyone should be anticipating Thad’s first solo project.

Seattle’s hip-hop scene is starting to catch on outside the PacNW and while we’re on our way, I’m also wondering how long it’ll take for other talented cats to get recognized. Helluvastate, a group formed by Taysean (of Helladope) and Thaddeus (of State Of The Artist), is a prime example. I’m not sure if Taysean and Thaddeus view their collaboration as a side project of sorts, but it’s clear that it’s a great match and worthy of far more publicity/buzz than I’m seeing for the duo.

On the low, Taysean’s production and rhyme skills might make him the most underrated cat in the town right now. Guys like him, P-Smoov, Ryan Lewis, and Budo are so ridiculously talented musically that it’s almost not fair. When they link up with dope MC’s, it’s a wrap.

Coming off the audio problems that plagued us on last week’s Sound Session archive, I was horrified to discover that the studio computer we use to record our show was completely inoperable…about 10 minutes before taking the air.  After realizing I wouldn’t be able to fix it in time, I put out a last ditch tweet in hopes that someone might be able to record it from their computer.  Sure enough, our SNSS listeners came through in the clutch!

While one faithful listener recorded the show through laptop speakers (the 2011 version of that old school Stretch & Bobbito tape you have in a shoebox somewhere), the sound quality probably wasn’t going to satisfy y’all.  Luckily, @therealKramer came through with a high quality rip of the show, which actually sounds stronger than anything we’ve recorded in our new studio (we’ll get that figured out, I promise!).  The first few minutes are missing, but if you haven’t heard Frank Ocean’s “Novacane” by now, you have bigger problems than missing the start of SNSS #311.
